    The desktop.ini files are backups that windows makes

    when changes are made to the desktop.

    I see them periodically because I have show hidden files

    enabled in folder options.

    I usually just delete them if I am not having problems with the desktop.

    If you want to stop these messages, go to Folder Options through Search click settings and you will see Folder Options, click it and the View tab and scroll until you see " Hide protected operation system files (recommended) and put a check in the box.

    First off, desktop.ini files have nothing to do with backups.  They have nothing to do with Microsoft "collecting" anything.  They have nothing to do with Advanced System Care.  Nor, for that matter, do they have to do with the Desktop, exactly!

    desktop.ini files have to do with the directory, i.e., folder, in which they reside!  (In that way, they have to do with the Desktop only insofar as the Desktop is a sub-folder in your user directory.)

    They define the folder, in that, if there's anything special about that folder, that special information will be found in the desktop.ini file.

    For example, if you look in you user directory, you'll notice that many of the directories in your user directory have special icons.  Those icons are defined in the desktop.ini file.

    desktop.ini files also tell if a folder is a Document folder, or a Music folder, or a Pictures folder, etc.

    In fact, in the Music folder, they go further than that, defining whether a folder is a "MusicArtist" folder, say, for \Music\The Beatles, or a "MusicAlbum" folder, for example, in \Music\The Beatles\Abbey Road.

    There are many more things they can define, far more than I could say here, but, no matter what they define, there is nothing wrong with them, and there's almost no reason to delete them!  The only reason I can think of is if you want to remove the special information about a folder or if the desktop.ini file manages to get corrupted.

    Hi ,

    Thank you for your reply. I already checked on the box that you have mentioned above, however every thing still remains the same. When I start the computer, Notepad starts with "[.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787.

    Not only that, I also found another hidden file on my desktop with

    [.ShellClassInfo]

    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769

    IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-183

    The following link is the solution to the  problem, but the solution only apply to previous Microsoft OS (solution provided by Microsoft), instead of Win 8.

    check your startup files those desktop.ini are on the desktop by default these are normally hidden files goto control panel folder options scroll down to show hidden files and folders make sure its ticked also scroll down to hide protected operating system files make sure thats ticked

    also right click on the desktop.ini go to properties and check that the file is hidden

    dont worry about the hidden .ini files on the desktop they do appear there even if u delete them

    if the file open on boot by its self open cmd with admin rights

    type sfc/scannow
