Changing analysis service tier from S1 to B1

Hi,
Can we change the analysis services tier from S1 to B1 through powershell?
Or can we automate the scaling on demand?

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A (Preview) platform.

Happy to answer your questions.

Note: You cannot change Analysis Service tier from S1 to B1.

Reason: Change your plan up or down within the same tier, or upgrade your tier. Keep in-mind, you can change plans within the same tier, but you cannot downgrade from a higher tier to a lower tier.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
To be clear, does this mean that if for example, we upgrade from S2 to S4, we will not be able to change it back to S2 afterwards? Or does this restriction only affects changes from B- to S-?

Thanks.

Hello @OlumideOluyisola-5679,

You can upgrade and downgrade in the same tier (with Standard tier). But you cannot downgrade from one tier (Standard) to another (Basic/Developer) tier.

You can easily change the instance level of Azure Analysis Services within the same tier. The limitation is that you cannot downgrade a Standard tier to a Basic tier, but you can upgrade a Basic tier to a Standard tier. Besides that limitation, you can do any change between choices available within the same tier. Moving from a Standard tier to a Basic tier is possible by doing a backup of the database and a following restore in a new instance created in a Basic tier. This is possible only whether the database does not use any feature reserved to the Standard tier (perspectives, partitions, and DirectQuery).

Hope this helps.
