This is my first Windows 8 machine.  I need to have the numeric keypad "on" as a default.

    Hi Alex,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community forums.

I understand that you need to know how to keep numeric keypad "On" during start up of Windows 8.

Are you referring to the Numpad or On-screen keyboard.

By default the numeric keypad status is the same as it was in when you properly shut down the computer. If it was on when you shut it down it will be on when you again turn the computer on.

If you wish to change the start up features, please contact your system manufacturer to change the bios settings.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

If you have any further queries or any queries related to Windows, feel free to post. We will be glad to assist you.

    Hello!

I have the same problem as Alex. I always have to turn on the numeric keypad on startup screen because by default is it off, no matter if it was on before shutting down the computer it is always off in startup screen. To be clearer about it: it is always off when I turn on my computer and it stays off forever unless I turn it on with the numlk key. Do you know a way to change this and make the numeric pad to be on by default?

I will truly appreciate if you can help me out with this.

    Thank you!

I never did find a solution.  I went back to using my Windows 7 machine.  I still have Windows 8 however and this is still a problem - especially since my password to login is mostly numbers.  I have to make sure to press the numlk key first.

I have the same problem and can vouch that the response from Alex is wrong.  The numpad comes up "off" no matter what its state when you shut down the computer.  Sorry, Alex, it's just a fact.
