Cannot Duplicate Displays

I laptop used to be able to duplicate display when I connect it to another monitor or TV.  But after I used the PowerPoint 2013 presentation, my laptop would not duplicate the display for both VGA and HDMI.  The default is extend screen.  When I press shortcut, Windows Key + P, it shows the option to duplicate screen, but nothing happens when I select it.  I tried changing the settings to "Duplicate these displays" through the Screen Resolution window, it will give me an error saying, "The display settings could not be saved.  Please try a different combination of display settings."  I have the ASUS X202E, running on Windows 8.1.  Can someone teach me the solution to this problem so that I can duplicate the display?

Open Display Settings in Personalize or Control Panel to change settings. Don't use Presentation Mode (win key+P.) That is for a projector. Instead choose external monitor. There should be an F key in the top row to select external monitor. Check your manual. Read--

Your laptop screen is the main screen. The external monitor duplicates it, not the other way around.

Try shutting down the computer and restarting to clear the settings. Unplug the external monitor first.

I tried changing the settings through Display Settings in Personalize to "Duplicate these displays" through the Screen Resolution window, it will give me an error saying, "The display settings could not be saved.  Please try a different combination of display settings."  Also, you mentioned external monitor, and an F key on the top.  Where do I find that?  I have also tried shutting down the laptop, but nothing is different.
