I did had a similar problem with a different error code. I was able to solve it by running "Malwarebytes Antimalware". It detected a few malware and after removing it, Windows update successfully complete its check.

I know with the holidays would delay a response somewhat, but I would have thought I would have heard something by now. I guess my problem isn't that worthy.

Sorry for riding on your thread, I'm having problems with the update as well. In my case, my laptop has been rendered unusable since. The Windows logo comes on, the circular dots spin, then a blank screen appears! The brightness level goes up and down and the processor runs from time to time, but I can't do anything else with it.

I've tried rebooting many times these past several days, and occasionally get to a 'restore' screen, 'repair disk' screen, 'repair file' screen, etc,  but they've all led back to the same rebooting to a blank flashing screen condition. The kernel or control panel are not accessible so I cannot run any diagnostics or check versions or even restore from my backup. I could not even get to the 'safe start up' screen during boot up so a Microsoft tech can assist with troubleshooting.

This has been a most frustrating experience and I hope the experts here can help the both of us solve our issues.
