After computer goes to sleep, I try to click on an app in the taskbar to maximize it,

such as Excel or Word, but the file won't maximize.   If I try to open another file,

it goes directly to the minimized icon on the taskbar and also won't open.

I've run into a problem with Word and Excel on multiple computers, both at home and at work, in which Word and Excel files won't maximize from the task bar after you open them. It has only happened to me with Office 2013. My solution is to click on the "Restore Desktop" button in the very righthand lower corner of the monitor. After doing that, the window comes right up the next time I try to maximize it. I think Microsoft missed a bug in their program.

    Hi Susan,

Please answer this question to get more clarity on this issue.

    -          Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

This issue might occur if some system file settings are set incorrectly. This issue could also occur if some 3^rd^ party services or applications are blocking the apps from opening. Sorry to know that you are facing this issue.

Let us follow these methods and check if this helps.

    Method 1.

Let’s run the power troubleshooter and check.

1-Press Windows key + X and click on Control Panel.

2-Double click on troubleshooting and click on view all.

    1. Click power and hit next to run the power troubleshooter.
    2. Follow the on screen directions to complete the process. Once it is done, close all windows and restart the computer.

    Method 2.

You may boot the computer in a clean boot state and check if the issue persists.

When you start Microsoft Windows, typically there are several programs that start automatically and run in the background that may interfere with the application. These programs may include antivirus and system utility programs. When you perform a clean startup procedure, you prevent these programs from starting automatically.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7, Windows 8:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow steps under “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot” in the article to boot to normal startup.

Reply with the status of the issue and we will be glad to offer our assistance.
