Error code 800F0206 windows update ran into a problem

Hi, I'm running windows 8.1, 32bit. I have been trying to install 'an important' update 'Microsoft driver update for Microsoft windows SideShow Development Hardware' for the last month and can not seem to get it installed despite all efforts.  Each time I get the same error: Error code 800F0206 windows update ran into a problem, And any suggestions that it tries to do, do not help.  I have run the update troubleshooter several times and each time it finds an issue with Update but cant fix it and leaves me hanging there.  I would like to uninstall this piece of hardware so that I don't get this error but it keeps reinstalling it on its own, and then again it starts with the 'important' update, then the error and so on.

Any ideas at all?  Many thanks for your help.

    Hi,

Windows SideShow is a platform that supports gadgets in Windows Vista. Gadgets are mini-applications that send data from a computer that runs Windows Vista to devices that are connected to the computer. The Windows SideShow platform is designed to be extensible so that any device can become a Windows SideShow-compatible device; one example of a Windows SideShow-compatible device is a secondary display attached to a laptop lid or bezel.

Based on my research these drivers were used with Windows Vista gadgets that were displayed in the Side bar but not used in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Windows might be offering this update due to some incorrect settings. I would suggest you to hide this update and check if you face any issues. Refer to the section ‘I keep being offered an update from Windows that I don’t want or that already removed’ in this article:

Currently, I believe this is the correct answer.

I am not sure why, but Sideshow was supported under Windows 8.  It seems that all Sideshow dependencies have been removed in Windows 8.1, and Microsoft is mistakenly trying to install drivers for devices that use files that no longer exist in your new 8.1 installation.  I'm trying to find out more about this, but for now, disabling your SideShow device or hiding the update is the correct solution

Thanks Bennet, I didn't think it was something that Windows 8.1 was using.  And prior to the upgrade I had been using Vista, then Windows 7 and then to Win8.1.

I will 'hide this update' going forward.  Thanks again.
