WksSS.exe Error Help!

I know that support is ending for my system but I need help while I can get it!

When attempting to open any Micro Soft Spreadsheet file I receive the following message.

C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~3\wksSS.exe

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegel instruction.

CS: 11ed IP:0145 OP: ff ff ff 00 00

Choose close to terminate application

I believe I inadvertently saved data in the Master copy of Microsoft Works Spreadsheet.  To late I noticed that I was saving to wksss.  I have tried several times to restore but the restore keeps failing.  I think I need to re-install the wksss.exe file but I do not have a disk nor can I find the file.  I did find wksss.dll in System 32 folder.  Can I use this file, copy and paste and rename it?   HELP!!!!!

If you find the folder I spoke of on your unit, click on install applications

Look for Microsoft Works in the application list and select it to reinstall

If you do not see it in the folder, cancel the operation

Start > Type Microsoft Works, or Works Processor, or look for wkswp.exe

Search the unit for the application

Thank you Smitty!  I did find the folder, with the re-install function.  I ran that function and can now access the Spreadsheet files!

I am grateful.  I know Microsoft will discontinue support for old versions, so I am very grateful as I do not believe Windows 8 will run on my computer and a new computer is a distant wish at this time.  Again thank you, thank you, now I can complete my taxes!  :-(

    Have a great week!  :-)

My computer is a Satellite A135 made by Toshiba.  It has Windows Vista Home Basics with a service pack 2.

I ran the scan now command but resource protection did not find any integrity violations.

In your first remedy you suggest a re-install from accessories, but will that remedy work although I do not have a Microsoft Works disk?

    Hi,

    What is the computer Make/Model?

This is an Example only.  On an HP or Compaq system there is a folder in Start > All Programs > Accessories

This folder is for HP Recovery operations.  Yours may be Dell PC Tools or some such.

You can Recover Original Drivers, Original software that came with the system or Recover Windows operating system

Look for such a folder on your system to reinstall Microsoft Works

Another option:  Run System File Checker to repair/replace missing or corrupt files.

Start > Type CMD > Press Enter

    Type sfc /scannow

    Press Enter

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

When finished, run chkdsk using Command Prompt window (CMD)

    Type chkdsk /F /R

    Press Enter

You'll see a message stating volume needs to be locked and would you like to start scan on restart.  Press Y and Press Enter

Reboot for the scan to begin

This takes longer than system file checker
