OT:             windows 8.1 code

I upgraded my new Asus laptop from windows 8 to 8.1 last night so it's done...They requested a code for a 2nd e mail address,,was I supposed to make up a code like a password or should the code be somewhere on the laptop??  I had no idea what they meant, this should be worded differently if they meant for me to make a code... I didn't put one in, shortly after Microsoft sent a code to me via my 2nd e mail address.  How am I supposed to get the form back to fill that in,  Or will Microsoft automatically put this code in for me?  Thanks

Hi Ann,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community.

Just a few questions first, to get a clear picture of the issue;

  1. Are you trying to verify your Microsoft Account?

Why Verification?

We require that you verify your email address when you use it to create a Microsoft account or when you add it to your existing Microsoft account. That way, we can verify that the email address doesn't belong to someone else. To sign in to Microsoft products and services, you have to verify your email address.

To verify your Microsoft Account via Verification Code, I suggest you to follow the Method below.

Method 1: How to Verify your Microsoft Account in Windows 8.1

  1. Press Windows Logo + "I" on keyboard to open PC Settings.
  2. Click on Your Account on the left side, and click on the Verify link under "You need to verify your identity." on the right side.
  3. Type your Microsoft account password, and click on OK.
  4. If you did set up **two-step verification**for your Microsoft account, then do step 5 below for how you would like to receive a security code to verify your account.
  5. In the drop down menu, select the Text or Email (your phone number or your Email) option, and click on Next to receive Verification Code.
  6. Enter the code given to you over the phone or Email, click on Submit.

Important: A verification code doesn't replace your password. Don't enter a verification code in the Password box.

Note: Microsoft might ask you to verify your security info again—for example, if you haven’t signed in for a long while. This is just Microsoft's way to double-check whether your security info is current, and to help prevent a hacker from accessing your sensitive info by pretending to be you. It won’t happen every time.
