Original Title - windows update

Windows updates are not installing (ran the diagnostic) code 800f0920 all on 8/16/14 failed, but the rest on 8/17/14 and 8/18/14 were successful. What driver is at fault? There is nothing in event viewer, action center, or anywhere. If the updates are so important why the obscurity?

Hi Tracy,

Please answer these questions to get more clarity on this issue.

-          Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

-          What is the KB number of the update that is failing?

Refer to the section “How will I know what updates have been installed?” from this article to “view update history”.

Windows automatic updating: Frequently asked questions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows-8/windows-update-faq

This issue might occur if the system files associated with the Windows Update components folder are not working properly. We would not know which driver is at fault without knowing the complete details of the updates that are failing.

I can imagine how much disappointing that must be. Do not worry; let us work together and get this issue fixed as early as possible.

Method 1.

Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds to completely shut down the computer. Once this is done, wait for about 5 minutes and then restart the computer and check if the updates have been installed.

Method 2.

If the issue persists, then run this Windows Update troubleshooter and check if this helps to improve the situation. You might be able to solve some problems by running the Windows Update troubleshooter that will automatically fix some common issues with Windows Update.

Troubleshoot problems with installing updates: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates

You may also run the Apps Troubleshooter and restart the computer to check if that helps. The Apps Troubleshooter is an automated tool which we have developed to address a number of known issues that can prevent the Apps from running properly. This troubleshooter automatically fixes some issues, including suboptimal screen resolution, incorrect security or account settings etc.

If issue persists, refer to the remaining steps from the help article and check.

Method 3.

Temporarily disable security software, reboot the computer and check if you are able to install the updates.

Disclaimer: If you have to temporarily disable the antivirus to install other software; you should enable the antivirus as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to virus attacks.

Method 4.

You may boot the computer in a clean boot state and check if this helps.

When you start Microsoft Windows, typically there are several programs that start automatically and run in the background that may interfere with the installation. These programs may include antivirus and system utility programs. When you perform a clean startup procedure, you prevent these programs from starting automatically.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7, Windows 8:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow steps under “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot” in the article to boot to normal startup.

Reply with the status of the issue and we will be glad to offer our assistance.

Over half have failed to install

    Ran sfc/scannow no problem found

Ran DISM.exe no component store corruption

Re ran update troubleshooter windows update components must be fixed   green check mark says fixed.

This refresh has been the most difficult yet, each time a different frigging problem.

    Only 131 updates have installed.

    Mouse driver caused crash

Also in event viewer i have audit failure and ALL with the same event ID 6281 (what ever that means)
