Original title: Backup error message 0x80010105

I'm unable to do a backup and keep getting the following message:

"Windows backup failed while determining libraries location of one of the users included in backup.

Details: A volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the application event log for more information."

Having checked the event log I'm none the wiser, can anyone help resolve this event problem?

Regards,

Ken

    Hi Ken,

    Thank you for the updates.

Since the issue persists, let’s try the following steps and check.

    Method 1:

You may perform a clean boot and check if it helps.

A clean boot helps to verify if any third party application services or startup item is causing this issue.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

**Note:**After you have finished the troubleshooting, refer to the section “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot” to boot the system in normal start up.

    Method 2:

You may try performing a SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

    Method 3:

You may also check if you can perform the backup to a different location or on a different drive.

Also make sure the Kingston Micro stick works fine on a different computer.

Hope the information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance with Windows related issues. We will be happy to help.

    Hello Preseetha,

Thanks for the info but after trying method 1 & 2 I am now getting the error message 0x80042302 and the same message about a volume shadow copy etc.

I'm trying to back up onto a Kingston 16GB Micro stick via a USB port. This was successful when I did my first backup with it!

Can't recall doing any software or hardware changes to my laptop, I'm no computer expert so appreciate any help you can give

    Regards,

    Ken

    Hi Ken,

    1. Where are you backing up the files?
    2. Are you using an external hard drive?
    3. Have you made any recent software or hardware changes on the computer?

You may get this error if you had an external drive connected and had one or more of its folders included in the Library. You may skip these libraries while backing up and check if it helps.

Let’s try the following steps and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

    Step 1:

If you are using an external hard drive for the backup, make sure it is turned on and also remove other external devices (except keyboard and mouse connected) and check.

    Step 2:

Try to exclude all the pre-selected libraries when you start the backup. To do so, follow these steps.

    a) Open Backup and Restore. Make sure to select “Change settings” in the backup and restore window.

    b) Select the drive you wish to use for the backup.

    c) Now, select “Let me choose” before clicking Next.

    d) From the list, uncheck all the pre- selected libraries and also uncheck “Include System Image”.

    e) Select files that you want to backup or your user profile which is usually C:\Users*yourname*and then click Next.

    Method 2:

Since you are receiving “Volume Shadow Copy Service” (VSS) error, you may also check the status of VSS.

Ensure that it’s started and the startup type is set to “Manual” or “Automatic”.

    a. Click “**Start”.**Type in services.msc the Start search box and press Enter.

    b. Right-click the “Volume Shadow Copy service” and click “Restart” to start the service.

    c. Double-click the service.

    d. Under the “Startup type” drop-down, select “Automatic”.

    e Click “Apply” and “OK”.

Hope the information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance with Windows related issues. We will be happy to help.
