I'm trying to use an old HP desktop after my new desktop cpu got messed up but I keep getting a oxc0000017 error when I start it up. It only has one ramdisk inside but I have a new ATI graphics card inside that I hook my HDMI cord up to. I've tried unhooking everything and booting it with not result, I've tried messing around with the BIOS with no result and I've also tried other solutions that I've read about on here but nothing works cause I can't get to my desktop cause it does it everytime I start my pc. Any Ideas on how to fix this so I can get back to my project I need for work? PS I've tried to system restore my pc but I still get the error

I've tried unplugging everything attached to my desktop and starting it but I still get the error, I've tried messing around with the BIOS with no luck. No, I'm not able to boot my computer to the desktop screen. All I do is see the HP logo screen when I start my pc and then the error.

    The exact message reads

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
    3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have this disc, contact your system administractor or computer manufacturer for assistance.

    Status: 0xc0000017

Info: Ramdisk device creation failed due to insufficient memory."

Thank you for sharing this information with us.

Based on the error that are being displayed on I would first suggest you to run HP System Diagnostics. Complete the following steps to open HP System Diagnostics:

    1. Turn off the computer.
    2. Use one of the following methods:
      • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every       second, until the HP System Diagnostics program opens.
      • Turn on the computer and immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup menu opens. Then press F2.

    - Then run the Memory test.

Refer: Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista)

I found some more RAM at my house so I stuck it in my pc and I got passed the error but now I get to "Windows is loading files..." screen then my computer reboots and does it over and over again. I've tried to use my recovery disc but it doesn't work because the files don't load, any ideas?

    Hello Chief,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

To help you suggest steps to resolve the issue, I would appreciate if you could answer the following questions:

    1. What “other solutions” have you tried to fix the issue?
    2. What is the complete/exact error message that you receive?
    3. Are you able to boot the computer to desktop screen?

If you are not able to boot to the desktop screen, I would suggest you to try disconnecting all external devices and check if you are able to boot to the desktop.

Once you are able to go to the desktop, make sure you have installed all the available Windows updates including the optional driver and firmware updates.

If you are already able to boot the desktop, you may try following the steps below:

    Method 1:

You may try checking if the problem persists in Safe Mode.

    Step 1: Safe Mode

Boot the computer in Safe mode and check if the issue persists. Follow these steps to start the computer in safe mode.

Click the link and follow the steps “Start your computer in safe mode

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

If the problem does not exist in safe mode, try to perform a clean boot and check.

    Step 2: Perform Clean Boot.

Putting your system in Clean Boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

Refer: How to perform a clean boot in Windowshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, refer to this section "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting"

    Method 2: System File Checker.

You may run the system file checker tool and check if it helps. SFC scan will scan for the corrupted system files on the computer. You may refer to the following article in order to use System File Checker tool appropriately.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.

If the issue still persists, I would like you to provide us with the Event Viewer logs which will help to understand the issue better.

    Refer: Open Event Viewer

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/open-event-viewer#1TC=windows-7

Do get back and let us know the status of the issue, we will be glad to help you further. We, at Microsoft strive towards excellence.
