Have tried everything suggest that I have seen,

disabling antivirus,

using online account rather than local account,

creating new user with admin status.

update gets to 87% then crashes update process with error code 0x8007004.

I took advantage of getting win 8 for $40.00 and also the limited time free media center.

When trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1 it shows it it trying to install 8.1 Pro now.

At first I said great, I am now getting Pro because I have media Caenter.

But no such luck after many tries since 8.1 became available.

When I upgraded to Win 8 from Win 7, it went so smooth , I was impressed.

Now I am not so impressed.

Is the error code 0x8007004 or 0x80070004?

Check the link mentioned below if the error code is 0x80070004 and see if it helps.

Been there and saw those days ago.

    Took off USB Mouse,

Ran 8.1 compatibility check and removed all programs that may be incompatible.

Uninstalled Adaware by Lavasoft, Spybot search and destroy.

    Disabled windows defender

Reset Windows store cache many times,

    Used new user account

    Nothing helps.

My computer is a dual boot giving me choice of win 8 or ubuntu that was installed via wubi years ago, Now problems with win 7 or win i went to win 8.

I like to keep up to date with ubuntu as I do some support for family and friends.

By the way, I have been building computers since 1981 with dos,

This dog has seen about everything over years, but getting win 8.1 is a real challenge from the threads that I have read.
