This app was't installed. View details. Error Code:0xc0000005

Tried to install win 8.1, it started. Downloading, Apply changes, ... then got message "This app wasn't installed. View details. Clicked on the message, a box pop out with message: Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc0000005" with two choices: Try again or Cancel install.

Either choice does nothing but corrupt my laptop, some systems files are wiped out. My laptop no longer works. When re-start the laptop, win 8 comes out but the win 8.1 installation comes up again and gets the same result: same error message and laptop no longer works.

Talked to and worked with a Microsoft support representative for a couple of hours and he cannot resolve the issue. He'll check with higher-up and call me to morrow.

I am having the exact same issue on my PC.  My Laptop install worked flawlessly.  The App install on my PC goes from Installing to Apply Changes to Getting Information ... then the same error pops up that you are describing.  I made sure I had enough space available and have Windows Defender disabled (suggestions from other posts).

Same with my Acer TravelMate TM8372G when updating from Win8 to Win8.1, got the same error code at update progress about 58% when compatibility was checking.
