Original Title: Windows 8 - No Sound

HP ProBook 6455b Windows 8

Hello, the sound on my laptop stopped working suddenly, never had any issues before. Looked into services.mcs and see that windows audio service is stopped. When I try to start it I get a dialog box stating 'Error code 0x800706cc: The endpoint is a duplicate'. There's also a red x over the sound icon on the icon tray. Checked for drivers, all working properly and updated, so it says.. Can anyone please help :(

Thank you.

I have found the problem. You probably all have AVG 2014 as your antivirus. Somehow it identified Windows audio files as a virus and settle them on quarantaine. Go to AVG>>Virus Vault and restore the files. Answer yes to all replacements.

    Dear MS team

I am having the same issue as described here. I have tried each of Geethu's fixes, except for the audio driver download as the Acer website (Aspire V3 win 8 not yet 8.1) doesn't have one more recent than the unit I am using.

I am presently trying to run sfc / scannow in administrator mode but nothing is happening - the screen shot illustrated in Geethu's helpful response doesn't look like mine. All that is happening is that after hitting Enter, the cursor moves to the next line but simply continues flashing.

So now I have a problem which I don't even know can be fixed.

    Please, can someone help?

    Mandy

    Hi Stephanie,

    Thank you for the reply.

Did you check if the dependency services are started?

I would suggest you to run System File Checker (SFC) scan and check if it helps.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

    Hi Geethu,

Thank yo so much for responding to my question. The only change would be an upgrade from windows 7 to windows 8.

The troubleshooter states that one or more audio service isn't running. After completing method 3 and downloading and installing the drivers using the compatibility tab, I still have no sound and there's still a red x over the sound icon on the task bar. When I go to services and try to start the audio service it still gives the same dialog box (The endpoint is a duplicate) :/

    Hi Stephanie,

For a better understanding of the issue, let me know if you make any recent changes on the computer prior to this issue?

This issue could have occurred due to these reasons:

    1. If dependency services are not running.
    2. Corrupt audio drivers.

Try the steps listed here and check if it helps:

    Method 1:

Let's run Audio Troubleshooter and check if it helps.

    a) Press the ‘**Windows + W’**key on the keyboard.

    b) Type troubleshooterin the search boxand then press enter.

    c) Click hardware and soundand click on ‘Playing Audio’.

**Method 2:**If the issue persists, I would suggest you to check if the audio dependency services are started and their Startup Type is set to Automatic.

    a. Press Windows Key +R.

    b. Type Services.msc and hit Enter.

    c. Scroll down through the list and find the following services.

    Plug and Play

    Multimedia Class Scheduler

    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

    d. Double-click on the services one by one and check if the services are started and startup type is automatic.

    Method 3:

I see that you have tried updating audio drivers, If you have not tried installing latest audio driver from the computer manufacturer website, I would suggest you to try the same. Check if it helps.

I see that there are no Windows 8 audio driver available in the computer manufacturer website. However you may download and install Windows 7 driver (for your Operating System edition) in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

To install the audio driver in compatibility mode, try these steps.

    a. Download the latest audio driver for Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website and save it on your local disk.

    b. Right-clickon the setup file of the driver and select “Properties”.

    c. Select “Compatibility” Tab.

    d. Place a check marknext to “Run this program in Compatibility mode” and select Windows 7 from the drop down list.

    e. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Refer to the article for additional information.
