Hi,

Just recently my computer has been automatically opening new windows while my web browser is open. This problem happened before but it hasn't happened again until now.

Is this a serious problem and is there anything I can do to make it stop?

Thanks,

Kate

Hi Kate,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.

  1. Does this happen right after when you start your computer?
  2. Which windows automatically open when you open your web browser? Are you referring to the new browser windows?

The issue may arise due to a virus infection on your system or if some programs are set to open at system startup. As per your post, you are currently not facing this issue, so you need not to worry much about the issue. However, if the issue re-occurs, then I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if the issue persists.

Method 1:

Step 1: Try to boot your system in a state of necessary Microsoft services in operation and a minimal set of drivers enabled, called Safe Mode.

Start your computer in safe mode

Note: Select Safe mode with Networkingin the Advanced startup options.

Step 2: If the system works fine in the safe mode, try to clean boot the system to run the system in a selective startup:

How to perform a clean boot in Windows

**Note:**Refer "How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting" to reset the computer to start as normal after troubleshooting.

If the issue still exists, try to scan the system for viruses as detailed in the next method.

Method 2:

The issue may also exist due to a virus infection. So, you may also run the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure computer is free from infections:

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Hope this information is helpful. If the issue still persists, please post back for further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.
