One Drive using hard drive space MacOS

Hello,
I recently downloaded and installed One drive on my Mac. This is because I use a PC for work where I use Microsoft products a lot, including One Drive. I thought that this would be useful to me when working at home on my Mac.
The problem is though that a large amount of hard drive space has been taken up as it saves files locally as well as in the cloud, which is frustrating and is causing problems on my Mac.
I noticed on another post that on the PC version you do not need to have files stored locally. Is this the same for the Mac version as I cannot find any preferences for this.
If I decided to delete One Drive from my Mac, would this affect any of my files held on One Drive?

Many thanks for any help.
