Cannot Get Back to Normal Mode

Hi Guys

I seem to have one problem after another lately. I'm on Win7 64bit, SP1 on a Dell Precision M6700 Laptop.

I have a big problem. I put the laptop into safe mode to run a full Zone Alarm virus scan. There were no problems found but now I cannot get back to normal mode.

If I click “Normal Start-up”, “Safe boot” turns itself on. If I uncheck Safe boot “selective start up” with “load system services” and “load start up items” are checked instead of normal mode. If I check “use Original boot settings, “Safe boot” is turned on again. What can I do? I either have to run in safe boot or selective start-up and I cannot access the internet as a result.

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key (alternative is Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information). Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload to your OneDrive (formerly Sky Drive), share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Please upload and share with everyone copies of your System and Application logs from your Event Viewer to your OneDrive and post a link here.

To access the System log select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, from the list in the left side of the window expand Windows Logs and select System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.

Yes Gerry, thanks, but that's the point of my mail. If I uncheck safe boot it reverts to selective start-up, not normal start-up. If I click normal start-up, it checks safe boot. The bottom line is I cannot check normal start-up without it simultaneously checking safe boot... Does that make the issue clearer?

To revert to normal mode you follow the same procedure except that you uncheck the box before Safe boot etc., and click on Apply..

    Hi Gerry

Thanks but getting into safe mode isn't the problem. Whatever I do I cannotget back into normal mode because:

    1. If I click “Normal Start-up”, “Safe boot” turns itself on.
    2. If I uncheck Safe boot “selective start up” with “load system services” and “load start up items” are checked instead of normal mode.
    3. If I check “use Original boot settings, “Safe boot” is turned on again.

Whatever I do, I cannot get back to normal mode and I need to do this urgently because I'm going away on business and I need my laptop.

    Any ideas would be welcome.

    Did you click Apply?

You can access safe mode from normal mode by selecting Start, Run, type msconfig and press the ENTER key. Click the Boot tab and check the box before Safe boot, click on Apply and OK and restart your computer.

To revert to normal mode you follow the same procedure except that you uncheck the box before Safe boot.
