System Restore missing Windows 7

Hi

I am encountering a problem today - my System Restore service has disappeared completely. I tried opening from Command Prompt or Start menu, it says that the rstrui.exe file is missing. I checked windows\system32\restore directory and there was nothing there. Even tried the sfc /scannow thing to no avail.

I do remember that my computer recently got a virus which I had gotten removed through AVG Anti-Virus. After a restart, some of applications were corrupted (my guess is that the virus had integrated itself to several .exe programs so AVG removed all of them). I just never saw System Restore after that.

Is there any way I can get it back?

Thanks for your reply. I guess I'll re-install Windows by an in-place upgrade. Stupid Windows!

    Hi,

You may try a work around for the errors in rstrui.exe.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/267511/en-us

Check if System restore window opens and post back the result.

    Follow these methods.

Method 1:. You may run a Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure computer is free from infections:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Method 2: Check if the System Protection is turned off:

    a. Go to Control Panel-> System & Security ->System

    b. Click System Protection on the left.

    c. Under Protection Settings , click the disk, and then Configured. Click on Turn on system protection.

Method 3: How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099

Note: Performing a repair installation will not damage files and applications that are currently installed on your computer. However, I would suggest you to back up all the important data from the computer before performing in-place upgrade.

    Back up your files

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance with Windows, we’ll be glad to assist you.

    Thanks & Regards
