Black screen when starting Solitaire

I had Windows 8.1 installed on my PC this week. Solitaire was gone, so I downloaded the Microsoft Solitaire collection. That went well, the install seemed to complete successfully, but when I start it, it shows 3 cards for a couple seconds, then the entire screen goes black. Any suggestions?

Hi John,

Please answer these questions to get more clarity on this issue:

-          After upgrading to Windows 8.1, did you install all pending Windows Updates and update all device drivers accordingly?

-          Is the issue specific to this game?

The black screen issue could be related to display drivers and might get resolved by updating the display drivers. Without the correct driver, the hardware or device that you want to use won't work properly.

You may update the Display driver and check.

-          Press (Windows key + X) and click on “Device Manager”.

-          Expand “Display Adaptor”.

-          Right click on the video driver and select “Update Driver Software”.

Refer to this article to know more about “Update Driver Software”.

If the issue persists, then you may access the computer manufacturer website to download the latest display driver for your computer and install the driver. Once this is done, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

I had a similar problem. I installed MS Solitaire Collection which worked fine until I installed the driver for an adaptor that would allow me to display catchup TV on my TV set via my laptop.

After that I had sound on all MS Collection games but no display other than a black screen. I uninstalled the adaptor driver and everything was fine again .... no problems.

My conclusion ............... dodgy adaptor driver that hijacked my dedicated PC driver. (so check if you installed anything with it's own display driver and try uninstalling it).

    Hope this helps

For info: I have Windows 10 on an Acer ES1 laptop.

Thanks for your efforts, but I resolved the issue by starting the game differently.

Maybe someday the game will be modified to allow us to deal a new game without waiting to move all the cards to the top piles. Painfully slow...

How do I close this thread?

Yes, all updates were applied. I did find that the game will start correctly if I use a different process to initiate it. So, no further problem...
