Apple Software Update doesn't work after Windows 7 Update

After sucessfully completing the latest Windows 7 update on June 12th, I discovered that my Apple Software Update feature no longer worked and I got a message that said *"The Apple Software Update server could not be found. Check your Internet settings and try again."*Additionally, my computer no longer recognized my iPad or iPhone when I plugged them in. I followed the advice in a previous forum that detailed completely uninstalling every Apple program, in a very specific order and then reinstalling them. I attempted this twice with no luck. Additionally I noticed that my torrent downloader was not working and gave me a fault of "Listen error. You should change the listen port." Both iTunes and my torrent downloader were working immediately prior to the Windows 7 update, so I am attributing the failures to the update. Also, I tried a system restore to right before the update, but that failed as well, receiving a message that informed me that the restore attempt failed due to anti-virus/firewall software programs running in the background. I have performed restores before and never received this message. Any help, ideas or suggestions would be appreciate. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Thank you for your update on the issue.

Your effort towards resolving the issue is much appreciated.

This may also arise due to the third party firewalls from the security software installed in your system. So, I would suggest you to disable the anti-virus installed temporarily on your system and check if the issue persists.

Disable antivirus software

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/disable-antivirus-software#1TC=windows-7

Disclaimer: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Post back your results for any further assistance.

I know this is an old thread, but it still pops up when I (and others) are researching this issue - BUT here is what worked for me today - and is VERY EASY! .......

Problem 1. - When clicking on "Update Now" after your iTunes "Search for Updates" tells you a newer version is available, and then NOTHING HAPPENS.

Related Problem 2.  - With Apple Software Update 2.2.  Error message: "The Apple Software Update server could not be found. Check your Internet settings and try again.".

Solution:  (found this info on another thread, so just passing along)

    • Go to the Control panel -> Network and Internet -> (and/or) Internet Options.
    • In the "Advanced" tab scroll down to "Security" and UNcheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk".
    • Now Apple Software Update 2.2 should work without problems.

(Just an FYI in case anyone is wondering:  I have Windows 8.1, and was updating iTunes to version 12.4.1.6.)

    Hello,

Thank you for keeping us updated on the issue.

    Method 1

Try to remove Phantom devices from device manager and then try to plug external device.

Windows sometimes displays USB drives and other removable devices that are no longer connected to your system. Here’s how to cure the problem and prevent it from happening again.

    1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
    2. At a command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    Set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

    1. Type the following command a command prompt, and then press ENTER:

    Start devmgmt.msc

    1. Troubleshoot the devices and drivers in Device Manager.

NOTE: Click Show hidden devices on the View menu in Device Manager before you can see devices that are not connected to the computer.

    1. Expand the devices and removed the phantom device drivers.(Greyed out devices)
    2. When you finish troubleshooting, close Device Manager.
    3. Type exit at the command prompt.

Note that when you close the command prompt window, Window clears the devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 variable that you set in step 2 and prevents ghosted devices from being displayed when you click Show hidden devices.

Method 2 If the above steps does not resolve the issue follow the steps given below.

    1. Plug the Apple device into a USB port on the computer you want to have recognize it.
    2. Open Device Manager (Start button, right click on 'Computer', select 'Properties' and 'Device Manager'.
    3. Open up the list of Universal Serial Bus Controllers (click on the little arrow beside the entry). One device should show up as an iPad or iPhone with an alert beside it (yellow triangle with exclamation mark).
    4. Right click on the entry for that device and select 'Properties'.
    5. Select the 'Driver' tab and 'Uninstall'.
    6. On the main 'Device Manager' window, select 'Action' from the menu bar then 'Scan for hardware changes' (if that option is not there - single click on one of the devices in the list, then go back to the 'Action' menu and try again)
    7. The scan should pick up your Apple device and load the driver.
    8. Unplug the device from the USB port, start iTunes, then plug the device back in. All should now be working.

Follow the above steps for each device not recognized.

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.

    Thank you

    1. Which anti-virus is installed on the computer? Bitdefender
    2. What is exact error code you get when you plugged the iPhone and iPad?

There is no error code, but it simply does not recognize the device. It doesn't appear in either iTunes or in the Windows Explorer folder under Computer.

Additionally, when I'm in iTunes and attempt to connect to the internet via the Match tab, the following message appears "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your network connection is active and try again". My computer was fully connected to the internet at the time without any error messages.

    Step 1

    - Ran and successfully fixed some other issues I had but it did not flag anything with my iPad

    Step 2

    Method 1

    - Would not run, gave me the following error: Troubleshooting cannot continue because an error has occured (Code 80072EE7)

    Method 2

    - Followed all instructions, iTunes will still not recognize the iPad

    Step 3

    - I was not setup to run a Proxy server, so this step just confirmed I didn't have the box checked

    Step 4

    - Conducted a clean boot and iTunes still would not recognize iPad

    Hello,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Community Forum.

I would like to know some information about the issue so that we could assist you further.

    1. What is the make and model number of the computer?
    2. Which updates were installed on 12th June?
    3. Which anti-virus is installed on the computer?
    4. What is exact error code you get when you plugged the iPhone and iPad?

    Check the update history

I would suggest you to try the following steps:

Method 1 Try to run Microsoft fix it.

    Step 1

Try running the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.

    Refer: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Open-the-Hardware-and-Devices-troubleshooter

    Step 2

Try to run the following fixit and check with the issue:

This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot.
