You can make a program full-screen by dragging the dividing bar away to make room for the app.

For example, here on my screen I have two apps open side-by-side:  the Internet, and my Calendar:

    Some items you open may automatically open split.  So if you're using the Mail app and click a webpage link, it will split for you so that you can see the email and the webpage link side-by-side.
