I'm using my laptop with Windows 8.1 pro.

I open services.msc but cannot locate the "Computer Browser" service even when I switching to standard or extended view tab. My work mate said he also install windows 8.1 and his laptop has the "Computer Browser" service.

But I notice that the "Browser" service is failed to start so I start it again and get the Error 1083 as in the screenshoot

So is the Browser service has anything to do with Computer Browser service and how can I fix this error. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Trung,

Browser service or Computer Browser Service is a feature of Microsoft Windows to let users easily browse and locate shared resources in neighboring computers. This is done by aggregating the information in a single computer 'Browse Master'. All other computers contact this computer for information and display in the Network Neighborhood window.

I would suggest you to run sfc/scan which would repair the corrupted files.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. When the scan is complete, the System File Checker tool indicates whether integrity violations were found. If integrity violations are found, the System File Checker tool lets you fix the integrity violations. Refer to the following article to know how to do this.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Let us know about the status of the issue. We would be happy to help you further.

    Hi Tadasha,

Thank you for your respone ,

I did as your instruction and the instruction in the System File Checker tool page. After the scan , it show that : "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log WinDir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.**"**So I did as the instruction and get the sfcdetails.txt on the desktop , I don't know how to upload it here but when I opened it there are six lines that show error(other lines are just regular  "Beginning Verify and Repair transaction...." and "Verify complete"):

As I understand these errors are about printer driver and quite irelevant to the problem I have. (I remember that I once tried to install the driver of the super old Toshiba Photocopier at my work place in my laptop but unsucessful so this is maybe the reason for these error show up) And I must admit that I don't know how to manually replace this as I can't find the location of the corrupted file.

Right now as you say I cannot access to the shared location by the server or any computer at my workplace :(

    Thanks in advance,

    Trung

    Hi,

I can say, I have also come across this issue in the last 2 days, been racking my head in finding a solution. There is NO "Computer Browser"service being listed in Services. Also the registry key for the HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services is missing the Browser registry key....As I have compared it to other system I have.

Tried doing an in place upgrade, to try to fix it, No Luck,

Tried Copying the Reg Key from another Win 8 system, and no luck.

Still looking for a solution, without having to reinstall the Win 8.1 OS.

Screen Shots below of Services, and Registry not showing the Browser Key

I ran from the command prompt  SFC/ Scannow....no errors found......

    Strange!!!

    Hi RUOK2,

It's been almost 4 weeks (2 weeks since I post the problem on this forum) since I run into this trouble and try to fix it, I ran SFC/ Scannow, chkdsk /f , replaced .dll files , tried Windows Repair etc. but no success.

So I decided to give up and turn to the last method: reinstall Windows 8.1 from scratch, and guess what , the "Computer Browser" appear again , and the problem's gone!

I guess because I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to 8.1 (to save my time from reinstall many programs) so some old services and registry still stored in the system and mess up with the new one.

    Good luck to you.

    Hi Trung,

Glad to hear the issue is now behind you.....

Seems you tried the same things I have.....I am trying to avoid the reinstall....

I am still working on trying to resolve it, I want to know what caused it, and how to fix it,....never seen this type of problem before. If it happened to you, and me, I am sure there are others, and this is not a one time issue......

My issue is working off a fresh install of Win 8, with 8.1 upgrade, everything has been fine for some time, up until a few days ago......Ironically this seemed to happen during the time I was setting up IPv6 alongside IPv4 on my network....

    Anyway.,.....  :- {

Glad to hear all is good now.....

    Best Regards!
