Duplicate display resolution problem

I have a problem with multiple displays which is confusing and frustrating, please can someone help?

My PC is connected to an LCD TV (as it has been for a while) via HDMI running a resolution of 1280x720 @ 50Hz. Occasionally I connect a projector and set it up as an "extended" display at 1024x768 @ 60Hz. I have no problems with this set up.

However, I now want to duplicate the displays but when I select the "duplicate" option the resolution of the HDMI output changes to a resolution which my LCD TV does not support. If I then disconnect the projector, the LCD resolution does not change back. I have to return to the "extended" mode to get it back.

I don't know what the solution is and I also don't understand why the resolution should differ between "extended" and "duplicate" modes".

I'm running Win7 64 Ultimate, my on board graphics is Radeon HD6310 with all the latest updates and bios etc.

Any thoughts?

    Hello,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.

    1. What is the make & model of your LCD TV and your PC?
    2. What do you mean when you say, "the resolution of the HDMI output changes to a resolution which my LCD TV does not support"?
    3. Do you get any error message when you say, "If I then disconnect the projector, the LCD resolution does not change back"?
    4. What is the resolution at which it changes, when you select the "duplicate" option?

Basically, when displays are set to "extended", individual properties of each display (monitor, LCD, Projector) is conserved (maintained) but when the display is duplicated the resolution set on the computer is forced on the other displays connected to the computer.

Also, please refer to the section: How Windows manages multiple displays in the following link:

    Hope this information is helpful.
