Hi, I'm trying to install an optional update for my HP computer through Windows Update, titled, "Intel Corporation - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2 - Intel(R) HD Graphics". If I don't install this update, my screen will flash every once in a while and then say, "Intel Graphics Adapter for Windows 7 has crashed, but recovered". If I try to install the update, it sits there for a minute or two, then says the update failed; Error 80070103, Windows Update has encountered an unknown error." Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

You should only as a last resort, install device drivers offered by Windows Update. I would suggest you go to the link below and search for the latest drivers for your graphics device.

Intel download center.

I had a similar but even more severe problem on my HP ENVY laptop after installing Microsoft optional update: Intel Corporation - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 - Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600

    Installation date: ‎6/‎7/‎2014 10:15 PM

    Installation status: Succeeded

    Update type: Optional

Intel Corporation Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 software update released in May, 2014

My screen was black and when I powered off and rebooted I returned to the same blank, black screen.

I called HP support and they resolved the issue as follows:

1 - Remove battery and power cord

2 - Press start key for 15 seconds to remove any static electricity

3 - Replace battery and power cord

4 - Power on then press F10 key, and press Cancel BIOS save

5 - Press F9 key, then press F10 key again, save an exit

    6 - Restart

My computer booted normally without any data loss. The HP technician cautioned not to install optional 3rd party updates through Microsoft Windows update, ut instead to install computer specific updates from the HP Support Update Center.

I hope this helps other to avoid a similar problem or to recover from it.

    Cheers,

    Ecto
