Windows Update problem - Error 800700B7

My PC is refusing to install KB2862330, KB2862335, KB2868038 and KB2884256.  They all come up with error 800700B7 if I install them individually.  I've tried disabling my antivirus (Norton) but it doesn't make any difference.  I've tried to clean boot but msconfig hangs when I ask it to disable all services. Any ideas?

    Hi Peter

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

As per the description I understand you are getting error code 800700B7 while installing all these four updates (Security Updates for USB Drivers) as mentioned above. You tried disabling Norton and performing clean boot but none of them helped you enough to get this problem resolved.

Let’s try these methods below to check if it helps

    Method 1

Let’s run this Windows Update troubleshooter Fixit to get the issue detected and fixed automatically

    Troubleshoot problems with installing updateshttp://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Troubleshoot-problems-with-installing-updates

    Method 2:

    System Update reediness tool

The System Update Readiness Tool can help fix problems that might prevent Windows updates and service packs from installing. For example, an update might not install if a damaged system file prevents the update from recognizing the version of Windows that's running on your computer.

Let’s download and run windows Update readiness tool to get all the Windows Update errors corrected.

For the MSCONFIG issue which hangs while disabling services please check in safe mode with networking.

Follow the steps in this Microsoft Link to start the computer in safe mode or safe mode with networking and check if issue persists there as well

Hope this helps, please write us back for any further assistance on this, we will be glad to assist you further.

    Thank you

    Hi Peter,

    1. Do you have a Windows 7 installation disc with you?
    2. Did you check by running System Update reediness tool?

Keep the computer in a clean boot status and check.

    Hi Ganesh

I've tried installing one by one. That's how I got it down to these four! They won't install either on their own or as a group.

The System File Checker doesn't reveal any problems.

I don't know if this is relevant but I now find that Games Explorer isn't working. An empty window appears but no contents.  It won't close and Task Manager won't run.  The PC gradually becomes non-responsive so I have to turn off the power.

    Hi Peter,

Install the Update one by one and check.

I would also suggest you to run the System File Checker tool and check.

Thank you for your answer. I've tried the Fixit and the SURT without success. I've also now successfully managed to clean boot but that doesn't help either. Any more ideas?
