Widows 8.1. I have found on my Desktop 2 icons and 1 in my Documents : Desktop.ini which are Notepad. Who installed them?. Can I delete them? If they are not viruses what is their function?. I have tried to attach them and I received an error : invalid file type and my PC has crashed.I had to shut down the PC manually.

Thank you

Ettore

Everybody has these files however as protected operating system files they are normally not visible.

In desktop mode open the Libraries window and select the View tab, click on Options.

In the Folder Options Window select the View tab, scroll down and set the tick on for the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended), click OK to make it effective and the icons should disappear.

These files are hidden because they are important for the way Windows works and should not be changed or removed

Thank you. I did follow your suggestion and the Icons are gone from the desktop and my documents. I now understand that this file are important to OS and they are not visible anymore.

    Thank you
