Original thread : telemetry.dll missing -- how to reacquire?

Some programs will not start without telemetry.dll, which suddenly disappeared. Error mesage: "this program cannot start because telemetry.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program." Reinstalling the program did not help, nor did any of the other suggestions on the forum. Are there any new suggestions for reacquiring telemetry.dll? One would think it could just be downloaded from Microsoft, but apparently not. I've also tried getting a call back from the Tech Support people, but it seems they aren't in the mood to answer questions.

    What are "some programs"?

Is is you email program?  iTunes?  Skype?

Is that the error message in it's entirety?

    Could it be Adobe Acrobat.exe

If that is the error message you see it has nothing to do with Windows.  It has everything to do with Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Have you searched the Internet for ideas and solutions?  This is the Windows community - not the Adobe community.

Here are suggestions/ideas that will not work:

Safe Mode  (has nothing to do with it)

sfc  /scannow (it is not a Windows file)

    regsrvr32  telemetry.dll  (just plain wrong)

Replacing your motherboard  (replacing hardware will not replace missing software)

There are several problems like this on the Internet and some are resolved so maybe one of these will work for you:

    From the Adobe community:

    https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1867621

Do some Internet searches (Google) yourself for things specific to the message you are seeing and you will find other ideas and solutions that actually work.

Alas, no suggestions from Microsoft solved the problem of reacquiring telemetry .dll. I have an HP ZBook 17 Workstation still under warranty, so am having a tech come to try and solve the problem. I think HP is the only company which will send a tech for free under these circumstances. Will let the community know what happens. Can HP solve the problem? Wait for the next installment of this saga.

    Hello Lee,

Thank you for providing a detailed information on your issue. I appreciated your efforts in resolving the issue. However, there are few more steps that we can try to diagnose the root cause.

    • Is there any pending Windows update?

Let's check if there is any pending Windows Updates to install.

Refer the link to check for pending updates

Install Windows updates in Windows 7

Restart the computer and check the issue. If the issue still occurtry the methods below.

    Method 2: Perform SFC scan

I would suggest you to perform SFC scan and check if that helps. The sfc/scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

Note: System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows

system files and restore corrupted files.

Save the results and send it to us, follow the nest method.

Method 2: Run Microsoft safety scanner

I would suggest you to run the Microsoft safety scanner.

The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

Run a full computer scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure that the computer is virus free.

    Microsoft Safety Scanner

Note*: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.*

Please post back with the results. We will be glad to assist you further.
