Cannot set Network Priority

Original Title: Windows prefers LAN connection despite ethernet priority setting

Hello, I have a networking issue with Windows 8.1 Pro.

It is being used as a server and has 3 NIC's installed. The first NIC has a public WAN IP address, while the second has a private LAN IP address assigned by a router (which connects to the same Internet provider). The third NIC is not used.

My issue is that despite prioritizing NIC #1 on top under the Advanced Settings section of Network Connections, my web browsing will always utilize NIC #2, or the NIC with the private address. I've tried other web browsers and moving the LAN cable to NIC #3, but Windows always favors the private address. The only workaround is to unplug the LAN cable. Then it will use NIC #1. It's like ethernet prioritization is completely ignored.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Thanks very much,

Eugene

Hi Eugine,

I will be glad to help you with the issue you have with the computer. I understand the frustration when things don't work the way it should.

The default network is selected by the computer. It automatically assigns a metric value based on the network connection's rated speed. If you want to change it, you may set the metric.

To configure the Automatic Metric feature:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Network Connections.
  2. Right-click a network interface, and then click Properties.
  3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  4. On the General tab, click Advanced.
  5. To specify a metric, on the IP Settings tab, click to clear the Automatic metric check box, and then enter the metric that you want in the Interface Metric field.

Hope this information is helpful. Please post in case you have any further issues, I will be glad to help you.

Thank you.

I don't have a "Network Connections" option anywhere. I have a "Network & Sharing Ctr. There is a five minute delay in my internet connections being available. I want to speed this up somehow. Please advise.
