Most recent backup failed. I got several error messages in the backup itself and going through the event viewer.

~the system cannot find the file specified error code: 0x80070002

~Application popup: Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Exception Processing Message 0xc000a082 Parameters 0x000007FEFCA9718C 0x000007FEFCA9718C 0x000007FEFCA9718C 0x000007FEFCA9718C

~The shadow copies of volume F: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume F:

~An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR3 during a paging operation.

   source: disk

   event id: 51

~The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

Data getting backed up comes from laptop hard drive and external hard drive all going to an external hard drive. I did a disk check and found no errors. I cannot find any other problems with my laptop.

The laptop is Windows 7 sp1 and both external hard drives are Western Digital 750gb and 2tb.

If you copy the entire USER folder, you will get most of what you refer to.

I have had so many instances of not being able to use "windows Backup" backup data in a restoration, that I finally just recommend against it altogether.

Yes, you need to remember, but that is just like many of life's tasks.  Most people only have to learn this lesson once.

I recommend my clients not use any backup software of any kind.  Simply own a high capacity external hard drive and periodically COPY your important data to a new folder on that drive.

-> While I do pretty much what you say, I would not recommend it to my clients. Here are a few reasons:

    • People tend to forget. They could use a scheduled task (which few would know how to configure) or an Outlook reminder (which many would ignore after a while).
    • The copy process would skip locked or hidden files, e.g. .pst files. Very bad. If you get it to include hidden files then you will backup zillions of temporary internet files.
    • Maintaining more than one version is cumbersome. I know that Windows 7 does not support multiple versions either but Windows 8 finally does.

I have several pages of advice on www.canadiantech.info  Just type backup in the search box to find them. This is absolutely a clean unadvertised place in which I place advice for my clients.

Since all the messages seem to point to HD I would go to the HD maker and download their HD checking utility and run it.  I suspect the HD is failing.
