I tried installing windows 10 10049 but after 6 hours it got stuck on the 30% setting the pc screen. So I rebooted the pc so it goes back to the previous version (I'll install windows 10 later by unplugging internet ;) ) but now it has been an hour and still stuck on saying "restoring your previous version" what do I do? I currently just shut off the pc and put the USB with the 8.1 files and turn the pc on but still at the same screen. I have no idea of any other methods

  • Power down the computer.
  • Wait 5 mins
  • Start machine again and Windows 10 setup will restore the system to the previous version of Windows.
  • Try installing the update again, do the following before:

1.    Open a Command Prompt (Run as Administrator)

2.    Type: cd %windir% and press the Enter key.

3.    Type: net stop wuauserv and press the Enter key

4.    Type: ren softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.old and press the Enter key.

5.    [ Note: if you get an error message, ignore and type the above again and press Enter ]

6.    Type: net start wuauserv and press the Enter key.

7.    Type: Exit and press Enter, then go back and check for Windows Updates again.

When the download reaches 100%, disconnect from the Internet immediately if you are connected by Ethernet or Wireless.

Proceed with the installation and hopefully it will update.

This work around discovered by Community Member Hula_Baloo has been a success for many.

If you have attempted this method, I suggest you skip upgrading and setup a dual boot configuration instead:

Ok here’s the deal I’m immensely frustrated by this same issue. My computer has been stuck on the “restoring previous version of windows” for several days now.

I don’t have a disc (my computer doesn’t even have a disc drive) and I do not have anything on a usb that might coerce the computer to function properly or assist in restoring the original version of Windows.

Everything that I’ve read so far in this forum suggest “clicking” or “opening” something. If I’m able to click or open something that would mean that my computer is functioning to some degree and not “stuck” in this horrid loop of “restoring previous version of Windows” followed by shutting down and back to the same black screen and same messsge indicator.

Please share a sensible solution for a computer that is stuck in this loop. I can’t click or open anything. I am not able to progress past the black screen. I need this darn thing for work so please help. Oh yea and F8...unsuccessful.

Maybe you should let it run for 6 hours to finish restoring?  Leave it running to see if it completes the restoration.

Most new machines come with a recovery partition allowing you to go back to the time of purchase, you will have to check your user guides (or the manufacturer's Web Site) for instructions.  Choosing that path requires you to save all valuable data first.

When I installed Windows 10 build 10049, it took nearly 10 hours to install, including the download time and other various updates.  Naturally I have since dumped 10 and gone back to using Windows 8.1.  I'll try Windows 10 again when build 10049 becomes a distant memory.  I don't think it was too stable on my machine.

If you want to ask questions about Windows 10 then there is a specific Forum.

I have a same problem with my laptop.

Microsoft doesn't know what to do and how to fix the problem. I think we should sue  the company. Because at the moment they ignore as.

Windows 10 is used for those who are testing the operating system. It is not a stable OS and should not be used as one.

What testing have you been doing on Windows 10? If it can be recreated, then I recommend you just do a reinstall of Windows 10.
