I upgraded to Windows 10, all my files became read only. I tried changes the file attributes but it would not let me. I switched back to Windows 8.1 and still can't change my file attributes. Any suggestion how to correct this issue..

Thanks

Yes, this is a nightmare and quite sloppy work by Microsoft.

Subsequent to my "Error" in downloading Windows 10 from a perfectly adequate Win 7 system, running Office 2010 Professional, I have lost many days of work time.  Correcting 1.5 Terra Bits of files, as suggested, is not fun.  I have tried everything, with very little joy.  I now have a computer, which is very business critical that can only talk to the internet, I certainly cannot modify or save any new work.

My interim solution has been to send Microsoft an Invoice (£4900) for the lost time.  I suggest everyone else with the same problem does the same.  All Addresses are listed on their Website.

It may not result in Microsoft paying up, so don't get excited, but it might trigger some very quick up-grade. Frank

I am having the same issue.  huge pain not being able to save my work!!!!

to solve it first I had to assign administrator rights to myself and all programs I use.. that took me several hours.   its not good enough to be a "administrator"   you have to have full permissions to read write also.

after doing that, and rebooting  to re-log in as my new admin w permissions,

now I am changing the attributes for each and every folder  from read only,       you can find this by right clicking on the folder   scrolling to properties .. click on that... and then finding it on the general tab ,   unclick the box that says read only  and then click apply

a dialog box will pop up telling you   you must have admin rights to make the change.  click apply   and it will start changing to remove read only.    If you click ok   it will not update the attribute and you will have to  open the properties box again

I have tried to change the attributes for all files from the drive  and it  will start but ends up with errors and closes out.    so now am going through the painfully slow process of changing the attributes each file

It is a long and very frustrating process,,   I have been working on this almost all night and since I woke up this morning,   some of my photos I cannot even begin to edit them because I won't  be able to save my changes to  any where.      My Seagate drive is also effected as well as all the files in onedrive and icloud,  UGGG!!!!

I pray the attributes won't change back if I reboot.

I hope someone from Microsoft  or with real tech background will respond with a simpler faster solution (and permanent) then what I have been able to come up with.

I know just enough to create more problems      but since I realize I am not the only one and how frustrating this situation is...   I thought I should share my round about way of fixing this situation

there is another thread with a response from a brilliant tech named Shawn.   the thread  is titled something like can't save files ....   i will find a link and post it shortly

Shawn provides directions on how to do this from %userprofiles%.  and it is much faster than what I did.   In fact I switched to his method shortly after I posted my crazy steps.

.           see In reply to Shawn 'Cmdr' Keene [MVP]'s post on August 8, 2015

you stll have to give your administrator self   Full permissions. "read write" first before you can remove/unmark the read only check mark in the general tab.   His method should save the changes even after rebooting where i was unsure if mine would

Shawn doesn't mention the need to unmark the read only box but I still could not save files in any of my folders until I did that..

One person suggested I disable OneDrive.   I am hesitant to do that until I have finished moving photo files from OneDrive to my seagate drive or Flickr.   Maybe that works.   I don't know because I did not try it,

one interesting note is my older HP laptop that had windows XP. did not have any of the problems that appeared on the newer HP laptop with Windows 8.1

at least now after all of Friday evening (until 5am) and the majority of Saturday i can now fiinish moving files and process those new photo files (i am an amature nature photo bug) and upload the new photos to iNaturalist.org

Next hurdle will be swapping out my TWCable modem... but thats for tomorrow afternoon.  must get some rest.

    Good Luck!

    Deborah

Deborah you are an angel 😇. I thought it was all a result of my incompetence. Thank you for your succinct and clear summary of the problem. Lets hope MS wake up to the massive inconvenience. Erik VM.
