Task manager crash

Hi,

I couldn't find an answer online, so I post here. My task manager crashes when I click "More details" in it, or when I click the "Open Task Manager" in Action Center to disable startup apps. Here is the log from the Event Viewer:

Faulting application name: Taskmgr.exe, version: 6.3.9600.17415, time stamp: 0x54503656

Faulting module name: Taskmgr.exe, version: 6.3.9600.17415, time stamp: 0x54503656

Exception code: 0xc00000fd

Fault offset: 0x00000000000a1ee4

Faulting process id: 0x1320

Faulting application start time: 0x01d05f634767eb4c

Faulting application path: C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr.exe

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr.exe

I read that RAMDisk can cause this - I don't use it. Also I have to mention that I have SSD, but no Junctions or Hard Links had been made.

I have no clues what can I do next. A help would be nice. ;)

Hi,

Check with your SSD maker for updated firmware.

Run SFC /scannnow and if errors use the rest of the procedure to correct them.

Use the method here to create an sfcdetails.txt which will allow you to see which

files were not repaired. Some do not matter. The top link also shows what to do

with files not repaired.

To open an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 8/8.1 put the mouse it the lower

left corner  OR  WINKEY + X - Command Prompt (ADMIN)

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files

on Windows Vista or on Windows 7 <-- also works on Windows 8/8.1.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

How to Run the "SFC /SCANNOW" Command at Boot or in Windows 8/8.1 <-- see Option 3

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html

That method creates the sfcdetails.txt file in the folder you are in when you run it.

So if you are in C:\Windows\System32>    then you will need to look in that folder for the file.

How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe)

program generates in Windows Vista (Windows 7 and Windows 8 are similar)

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228

That creates sfcdetails.txt  in C:\Windows\System32   find it and you can post the errors into

a message here. NOTE : there probably are duplicates so please only post each section of

errors once.

You can read the log/txt files easier if you right click on Notepad or Wordpad then RUN AS

ADMIN - then you can navigate to sfcdetails.txt ( in C:\Windows\System32 ) or cbs.log ( in

C:\Windows\Logs ) as needed. (You may need to search for sfcdetails.txt if it was not created

in the default folders.)

Or you can extract the file from the Windows 8/8.1 DVD.

Or use DISM : (best to have redundant backups of data)

Run this command which will download necessary files.

WinKEY + X - Command Prompt (ADMIN) :

Type in at the prompt OR Copy and Paste these one at a time : (Hit enter after each)

=======================================================

Are you using a 3rd party antivirus/antispyware/security program? If so many of those

can cause startup and running problems. Uninstall 3rd party antivirus and use Windows

Defender which in Windows 8/8.1 is a full antivirus product.

Check with the System Maker Support (Motherboard Maker for custom systems), their

on-line documentation and drivers, and ask in their forums about any known issues.

Update the BIOS, low level chipset drivers, and the major on-board and separatedevice drivers (all of those can have a definite impact on boot speed and performance).

Note using Win Key + X and Win Key + W (to get to Control Panel, Run, and Settings

as needed). Win Key + D calls the desktop and the using Win Key toggles Desktop and

Start Screen.

Check Startup Programs.

Right Click in the lower left hand corner - Task Manager

Or WinKEY + X - Task Manager

Or Right Click the Taskbar - Task Manager

Check the StartUp tab.

If needed :

Try doing a "Refresh your PC without affecting your files" (or changing your personal

settings) or even a Restore. Be prepared to re-install the programs, Apps will remain.

And having redundant backups of your files off of the main hard drive is always a

good idea.

    Hi,

Unusual task manager issues can also be caused by malware :

If you need to check for malware here are my recommendations - these will allow you to do

a thorough check and removal without ending up with a load of spyware programs running

resident which can cause as many issues as the malware and maybe harder to detect as

    the cause.

No one program can be relied upon to detect and remove all malware. Added that often easy

to detect malware is often accompanied by a much harder to detect and remove payload. So

its better to be overly thorough now than to pay the high price later. Check with these to an

    extreme overkill point.
