I have a retail copy of Windows 8.1 installed on a computer. I would like to remove it completely so that I can use the media to install Windows 8.1 on another computer that does not have Windows installed on it. How do I do this in such a way that Microsoft will allow me to use the media on a different computer that is in a different country to the original computer.

Boot from the Windows 8 DVD

a) At the Install Now screen

b) Click Repair your computer

c) Click Advanced Options

d) Click Command Prompt

At the command prompt, type: FORMAT C:/

Hit Enter on your keyboard

Type Y for Yes

Hit Enter

Wait while the drive is formatted.

Type EXIT to close the prompt and click shut down to turn off the computer.

or just uninstall the product key and proceed to install it on another computer and reactivate by telephone:

Press Windows key + X

Click Command Prompt (Admin)

At the command prompt, type: slmgr.vbs -upk

Hit Enter, this will uninstall the product key from the computer and set it back to trial mode, you are now free to use it on another computer.

Press Windows key + X then clickRun, then type: slui.exe 4

  1. Next press the 'ENTER' key
  2. Select your 'Country' from the list.
  3. Choose the 'Phone Activation' option.
  4. Stay on the phone (do not select/press any options) and wait for a person to help you with activation.
  5. Explain your problem clearly to the support person.
