Cannot access deceased father's computer

What a title, huh? Sadly, my father passed away in May and he had a password on his computer. It was literally the only password he did not write down. We have no idea what documents he has on his computer, but I'm not sure how to go about getting into it. He has a legal copy of windows 8.1, and I believe I found the original disk and serial numbers to it. How would I go about resetting my father's passcode and would Microsoft assist?

Thank you,

Roz

    Hi,

We are sorry about your loss, but unfortunately we can not assist you to access the Data except for the advice given below.

"What to do if you forget your Windows 8/8.1 password"

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-do-forget-windows-password#1TC=windows-8

If you've forgotten your Windows password, there are several ways to retrieve or reset it:

    • If your PC is on a domain, your system administrator must reset your password.
    • If you're using a Microsoft account, you can reset your password online. For more info, go to the Reset your password webpage.
    • If you're using a local account, use your password hint as a reminder.

If you've tried these suggestions and still can't sign in:

    • If you have Windows 8.1, you'll need to reinstall Windows.
    • If you have Windows RT 8.1, you'll need to contact your PC manufacturer.

    Hi

    Sorry for your loss.

I would recommend hat you take the computer to a local repair shop. They have techniques that can be used to recover the password. This service is normally very low priced and only takes a few minutes.

Be sure to take the documentation that proves your ownership of the device.

    Regards
