Problems with System Update readiness tool

Split from this thread.

Sorry to interrupt this thread, but I just tried to run the Update Readiness Tool, with unfortunate results:

Windows update standalone installer

Download from

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=3132

which is the link for 32-bit systems provided at:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-is-the-System-Update-Readiness-Tool

Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x86.msu (Microsoft Update Standalone Package)

Right-click and “Open” produces the following message:

“X Installer encountered an error: 0x80070026

Reached the end of the file”

Presumably I should post this somewhere else, but as a question in this forum ?

Two tangential points: a) why do .msu files not give the right-click options Run and Run as Admin, but only Open – even though the instructions say to Run ?, and b) I downloaded and ran the file twice, with the same results, but note that on each occasion Firefox first downloaded a .part version of the file before the complete (?) article (needless to say, I did not try to run the part versions)

I am posting this here partly because this is where I first came across mention of this tool, and it seems remarkable that M-s**t has not drawn people's attention to it (for instance as an update); and partly in case that helps to explain why The Hobbits has been having difficulty with this tool - if it is in fact not yet fit for purpose (I agree that there seems to be a number of other things s/he needed to do).

I don't suppose this helps, but I don't know what else to do right now.

Best wishes, adj99

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click Command Prompt, and click Run as administrator from the drop down menu.. Type cd\ and press ENTER. Type "chkdsk d: /r" without the quotes and press the  ENTER key. Make sure you include the spaces indicated. On completion type exit, press the ENTER key and restart the computer.

To eliminate recurring Event ID: 10 errors in your Application log please run the Fix it in this KB Article

You have a failing Windows BackUp!

Log Name:      Application

Source:        Windows Backup

Date:          20/11/2014 16:00:15

Event ID:      4103

Level:         Error

Description:

The backup did not complete because of an error writing to the backup location H:. The error is: The backup location cannot be found or is not valid. Review your backup settings and check the backup location. (0x81000006).

Is the removable disk not connected?

There have been some problems recently with the Microsoft servers. Please try again:

Why did you want to run the System Update Readiness tool? Windows Update appears to be functioning correctly.

Regret delay, but unfortunately famly members keep kicking the bucklet and am a bit pressed right now.

By and large I have stopped using Windows Backup, since twice it refused to re-install, and has refused to be able to read its own back-ups. I am reasonably happy with a pogram I have re-installed, called AOEMI, which I use about once a week (and before Microsoft updates) - and very happy with Carbonite when I can find my password and get it going again. (this fallure to back up was my own fault, I forgot to turn the external drive on, and later successfully backed up). I last ran CHKDSK about 3 weeks ago, but will do so again. Wanted to run Update Readiness Tool, because sometimes had difficulty getting updates, as I think I said earlier but if not, then sorry.

Will come back to thread when have more time, and remain v. grateful for your help. adj99

    1. Link to OneDrive files:

    http://1drv.ms/1trXRbH

    1. System Information is marked incomplete because does not contain manufacturer name (boring) or fact that location is France (or detail that W7 ultimate is not fully anglicised). Too late to change name now, but I chose not to tamper with the exported file.
    2. Have uploaded Setup log file from event viewer as well, as that is the only one to show any details, as far as I can see, of the System Update Readiness Tool operations.

Hope this helps - I had looked at the logs before posting. but you will know more about what they say than I do.  Thanks anyway for your interest, and hope the files come across correctly.

To troubleshoot most computer problems it helps to look at available clues in the System Information file and the Event Viewer logs. An experienced eye can pick out the needles in the haystack and see more clearly the precise nature of the problem or problems.

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. Type System Information in the Search Box above the start Button and press the ENTER key (alternative is Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information). Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload the file to your OneDrive, share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Please upload and share with everyone copies of your System and Application logs from your Event Viewer to your OneDrive and post a link here.

To access the System log select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, from the list in the left side of the window expand Windows Logs and select System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files. Do not place the cursor in the list of reports before selecting Action from the menu. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.
