Windows Server Backup problem

Windows Server 2012r2
I am using a 2TB usb 3.0 drive to backup my data drive and keep getting eh error "Failed" "Volume is too small to accommodate restore point mettadata. Please ensure that on volume included in backup is at least 512mb in size".
The data drive has over 22gb of data on it.
I have no idea what the problem is, can anyone help
