Restoring clustered hyper-v role from a manual backup - unable to attach second disk

Hello all,

I'm hoping someone can help me out. To cut a long story short, I need to restore our virtual SCCM server. It's clustered and has 2 disks. One for the OS which is 60GB and the data which is 600GB. I had a backup which I had taken a week before by shutting down the role and manually copying the entire SCCM folder from within Cluster Storage to a NAS (export didn't work) I'll be honest, I can't remember if I shut the role down from Hyper-V or Failover Cluster Manager, I know now it should have been the latter. I'm new to Failover Clusters.

I detached both disk 1 and disk 2 from the virtual machine settings and re-attached them both with the backups. The role boots fine, I can log on with a domain account but I don't see disk 2 mapped as the 'X' drive.

In Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management - I can see disk 2 but it tells me it needs initialising. If I go through this process, I have to select either MBR or GPT and then it wants to format the disk which will loose the data.

I have tried deleting everything within ClusterStorage\SCCM but it won't let me delete certain files, I presume because it's clustered. I have tried manually copying these 2 disks multiple times, tried different drive attachment numbers but I just can't get it to map that X drive in Windows. I'm pretty sure the C drive was location 0, DVD drive location 1 and the data drive was location 2.

I have even tried creating a brand new VM on the cluster and attaching both drives but still get the same problem. That's how it is now, a new VM called sccm2 which boots and lets me log on but still no data drive.

I'm sure I probably haven't gone about restoring it correctly but my thinking is if I have a copy of everything, I should be able to get this drive back?

Thanks ever so much in advance to anyone who can help, I really appreciate it.

    Hi,

manually copying the entire SCCM folder from within Cluster Storage to a NAS

Could you describe the detailed copying process?

I detached both disk 1 and disk 2 from the virtual machine settings and re-attached them both with the backups.

Do you mean you detached and re-attached the OS disk and data disk?

Please tell me how did you restore the role from backup?
Is this VM running well except for the data disk?
Please check if there is any error id in event viewer, if yes, please provide the detailed error information.

    Thanks for your time!
    Best Regards,
    Mico Mi

    Hello Mico,

Thanks ever so much for replying, I really appreciate it.

Last week, before the problem occurred, I had shut down the VM and copied the entire folder located at C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\SCCM to a NAS. So I have everything that was there when it worked. A folder called sccm with 3 sub folders, Snapshots, Virtual hard Disks and Virtual Machines.

To restore, with the vm shut down, I manually copied the entire contents back. It wouldn't let me overwrite the VMCX and VMRS files. After copying, I I did detached and re-attach both disks from Hyper-V settings then started the VM.

The machine booted, the OS loaded fine, I could log in, the 2nd disk is seen in Computer Management but it was offline and needed initialising.

I was working on this yesterday and to be honest, I have ended up making the the original VM worse as it now won't boot. I haven't deleted it yet so it can probably be fixed but the situation I am in now is I have created a new virtual machine from Failover Manager called sccmfeb of the same spec and attached those 2 disks again. The same problem exists, I can see that 600GB drive fine in Computer Management,, but it needs initialising

In the Event Viewer, under System logs, I see the following Event 2 events:

    10016

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {8D8F4F83-3594-4F07-8369-FC3C3CAE4919}
    and APPID

to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

    5002

The description for Event ID 5002 from source Microsoft-Windows-WAS cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

    WsusPool

Thanks very much for your help with this.

    Best Wishes

    Hi,

    Thanks again for replying.

I have restored several vm's in the past by just spinning up a new machine and attaching the disks. The VM was completely shut down when I took a copy, I don't really understand what you mean regarding in-flight I/O's - can you just explain what this is?

Also, If I had exported the VM then imported it, would that have worked or do I need to always use backup software to backup the vm's

    Thanks Mico
