    Hi Ruth,

Pointer came back sometime yesterday afternoon, cant say when. Kept checking every so often and presto, it was back. Now today having same problem, its there, then its not. Still can see it affecting the screen at times but pointer keeps coming and going. This problem has happened 3 or 4 times this year. Computer is about 1 year old and runs Windows 8.1. No changes were made to computer and computer was refreshed just last week.  It is a wireless Logitech mouse. Tried your suggestions, didn't work.

    Hi Christopher,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Communities.

I understand you have issues with your mouse on the computer. We will try to fix the problem.

    1. Is it a wired or wireless mouse?
    2. Was there any change made on the computer since yesterday?

Mouse problems can have a number of causes, incorrect device settings, missing updates, corrupted or incompatible drivers, hardware problems.

Let’s troubleshoot the issue from the scratch and find out the cause of the issue. Follow the methods:

    Method 1:

Refer to the link to run the troubleshooter:

Refer to the section “Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/what-device-isnt-installed-properly

    Method 2:

Let’s try updating the driver for the mouse and keyboard and verify the results. Follow the steps:

    a) Press Windows and X key together and select Device Manager.

    b) Locate the Mouse and other pointing device icon. Right click on the driver icon.

    c) Select Update driver software.

    c) Select "browse my computer for a driver software".

    d) Select “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”.

    e) Select the driver option according your device model and installed.

    f) If this does not work, follow the steps from ‘a’ to ‘c’ and select “Search automatically for the updated driver”.

    g) Choose the same steps to update the driver for keyboard as well.

    Method 3:

You may also check the mouse settings.

    a) Press Windows key + X, select control panel.

    b) Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.

    c) Click on Mouse and click on the pointer options tab.

    d) Uncheck the box against Display pointer trails.

    e) Click OK and apply.

Check if it resolves the issue. If not, I would suggest you to download and install the latest available drivers for the mouse and keyboard from manufacturer website of the computer. If the drivers are not there for Windows 8.1, install the driver in Windows Compatibility mode. You will need to uninstall the current version of the driver and install the latest ones.

Refer to the link to run the Windows Compatibility troubleshooter to install the drivers:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/older-programs-compatible-version-windows

If your computer came with Windows 8, you might be able to restore it back to Windows 8 by refreshing your PC. Your personal files won't be affected, but apps that didn't come with the PC will need to be reinstalled.

Please reply back with the results.
