Windows Update encountered an unknown error. (Code 8024200D)

Okay, so I have been trying to fix my Windows Updates for days now, being able to fix two of the three that I had problems with. Now, however, I have run into a problem that I do not understand. While trying to install "Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2799926)," I receive the above error message. I have tried downloading the update and installing it with a clean boot, just to get the message "This update is not applicable to your computer." Why is my system trying to install an update that is not even compatible with it? I have tried the System Update Readiness Utility and Microsoft Fix It, but neither of these resolved the issue either. Can I please get some assistance on how to resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Trevor,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

This issue could be due to change in Windows update setting or some software conflicting with Windows updates.

    Refer to the below methods.

    1. Open Date and Time by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel,
    2. Click on Clock, Language, and Region and then click on Date and Time.
    3. Click the Internet Time tab, and then click on Change settings. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Hi Trevor,

Thank you for your reply with the current status of the issue.

I would suggest you to try the third method again from the previous post.  I have changed the steps which is applicable to Windows 7 from Windows 8.1.

If the issue still persist, refer to the below steps.

Step 1: I would suggest you try to update the Computer in clean boot state and check if it helps.

Clean boot disclaimer: A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows. You may also troubleshoot or determine what conflict is causing the problem by performing a clean boot. You must log on to the computer as an administrator to be able to perform a clean boot. Your computer may temporarily lose some functionality when you perform a clean boot. When you start the computer normally, the functionality returns. However, you may receive the original error message, or experience the original behavior if the problem still exists. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from following these steps.

Once you perform clean boot do refer to the section “How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting” to boot the computer in normal mode.

Step 2: I would suggest you to try to download and install the update manually. Refer to the below link to install it.

Hope it helps. If you need any Windows related assistance in the future, feel free to contact us and we will be glad to help.
