Does Windows Update work?
You can manually download the (large file with engine and full definitions) latest definitions from the portal here: https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/default.aspx
See the following Wiki article: Troubleshooting General Errors while Updating
Consider:
Restore, reset, refresh Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc or

I also am having the same problem. The KB article above is no use. The Fixit offered says it doesn't apply to this system.
This computer is a single home use desktop--W10 Tech Preview 9926, so it is not a domain issue. (I tried a later Tech Preview build but it had several problems and wasn't as reliable as this version, which I am generally very pleased with.)
Are there any solutions?
