Can not copy past hyperlinks into email

I have Windows 7 with Window Live mail.  It's strange I can copy and paste hyperlinked text from a WLM email into this query form but I can not do that in an email itself!

The simplest everyday task can not be done. I can not copy and paste sentences (text) with a hyperlinks.  I can not copy and paste hyperlinked text from one email into another, I can not copy and paste hyperlinked text from a .wpd document, a pdf, or from any other source into an email.  Indeed I can not even copy and paste hyperlinked text from an email into that SAME email (below it).

The pattern is the same in the reverse in that I can not copy and past hyperlink text from WLM to any other document. All that get pasted is the raw text with no hyperlink.  WLM is the only program I have this problem with.  All that copies or pastes is raw text.  I always loose the hyperlinks whether I am pasting into or from a Windows Live Email email.  If I copy hyperlink text in either direction (even into that same email) I loose all the hyperlinks and must recreate them.  This is really frustrating.  The simplest and most common process we use every day can not be done in WLM.  This is rather maddening.

    Hi John,

I understand the frustration when things don’t work as expected.

Make sure you have the latest version of Windows Live mail.

Perform the steps suggested by Helene_C from the link mentioned below and see if it helps.

Thanks but you link me to a haystack full of needles. Helen C does not provide any “steps”.  She just provides a link to download the latest version of WLM.  Are there different "steps" posted by Helen C?

Still, the link she provides provides absolutely no directions on how to install it and I am very concerned about a new version/installation disrupting my several email accounts (so difficult to set up) and also concerned about disrupting dozens of sub-directories of email in the storage folders for different projects.   I  need clear, clean, simple, complete, instructions.

How do I even know if I already have the latest version?  Most of my software updates automatically.

Also I do not use IE but FF.  Does that matter?

Finally what  is this link for “sign in” at the WLM screen?  I have nary a clue what it's all about.  I send and get email just fine and I don't sign in to ELM?

And P.S., the link  she provides refers to two programs. Mail and Writer. What is Writer? Why do I need it?  Do they come together?

Also that link states, "Add events to your calendar from your inbox." What  calendar? I am not aware of any calendar with WLM.

The latest version of Windows Live Mail for Windows 7 is 16.4.3528.0331. You can see your version and build numbers by pressing Alt-F B when viewing your message list.

Users experienced problems with pasting hyperlinks into message compose windows after installing Internet Explorer 11. The cure is either

    • uninstall IE11 and revert to the prior version (not recommended)

    or

    • apply the registry change below that causes Windows Live Mail to use IE11 standards instead of its default IE8 standards.
    1. Close down all running programs.
    2. Set a restore point.
    3. Type regedit into the start search box and press Enter. Give UAC consent when asked. This will open the registry editor.
    4. In the left-hand pane, navigate to

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

and click on FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION 5. Right-click in the right-hand pane and select New > DWORD. Type wlmail.exe to change the value name and press Enter. 6. Double-click on the new value name wlmail.exe to open the configuration box. Type 2AF9 into the box and click OK. 7. On 64-bit (x64) machines, perform steps 5 and 6 again at

*HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE* *Wow6432Node* Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION 8. Close down Registry Editor and reboot the computer. 9. Launch Windows Live Mail and test.

[  to ウィンドウズスクリプトプログラマ for this tip ]

Windows Live Mail makes extensive use of some Writer functions when composing messages, so it's as well to install it at the same time.

You access the calendar in Windows Live Mail by clicking the second icon at the foot of the folder pane or pressing Ctrl-2. In the Mail window (click the first icon or press Ctrl-1), clicking Calendar pane on the View tab will toggle a narrow calendar on and off.

Thanks. When I am at WLM and press Alt-F B I get “Version 011 (Build 15.4.3555.0308).

But for reasons explained here and threshold questions still not answered I'd no dare proceed.

“Users experienced problems with pasting hyperlinks into message compose windows after installing Internet Explorer 11.”

I do have IE 11 but perhaps you did not read my reply to you.

First, is that after they install the newest WLM?

Second, as I said, I use Firefox.  Does that matter?

“The cure is either uninstall IE11 and revert to the prior version (not recommended)”

    I don't even think I have a prior version.

“or apply the registry change below that causes Windows Live Mail to use IE11 standards instead of its default IE8 standards.”

Total Greek to me.  When we are now getting into upgrading and installing WLM (still not clarified) and then tinkering with the registry.  Waaaaaaay beyond what I think anyone can expect from an average user.  I already have a career. All this just to copy and paste hyperlinks?  This is FAR too complicated and rather risky.  No way I'd attempt it.

“Windows Live Mail makes extensive use of some Writer functions when composing messages, so it's as well to install it at the same time.”

My life is complicated enough.  One word processing program is all I want.

“You access the calendar in Windows Live Mail by...”

Thanks, I now realize I did see that before and it's functions are so limited I regarded it asuseless.

Aside from all this please notice that my first questions have not been answered as to how to   install the new WLM and how that effects my existing email accounts or my storage folders. A threshold issue.

Nor does it answer my question about the sign-in button.

So with so many questions still not answered, and the additions of very technical tinkering with the registry, all this leaves me far too confused, in a far too risky and far too complicated process, and all this just to copy and paste hyperlinks.  Thanks but I would not even dare proceed on the information I have. Far too complicated. Far too unclear? Far too risky.
