Wrong program icons after renaming

(I am using Windows 8.1 at the moment.)

Just as an example:

I have in a folder

  • an executable named Green.exe, with a green program icon (as produced by compilation), and
  • an executable named Red.exe, with a red program icon.

Now I

  • delete Red.exe and
  • rename Green.exe to Red.exe.

After this, the program icon changes too, from green icon (which is correct) to red icon!!!

Windows seem to not refresh this kind of icon associations correctly. I have to restart the computer to see the correct icon (the green one, in above example).

Unfortunately, this is not only an aesthetic issue. Applications which rely on correct program icons are not working in some situations.

Is there a way to force Windows to refresh this kind of icon associations?

Hi Anton,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are having issue with associating the correct program icon after renaming them and you have to restart your computer every time for the changes to take place.

Unfortunately the issue that you have mentioned over here is more suited for the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) community, so I suggest you to post the same in MSDN forum for further assistance with this issue. Here’s the link for it:

Thank you.
