    Hi,

Try a Startup Repair and / or a System Restore using a Microsoft Vista DVD

Manufacturers Recovery Disks do not normally have Repair Options; thay are normally a reinstall to Factory Settings option only.

Here is the guide to using the Repair Options while using a Microsoft Vista DVD.

If a friend or work acquantance of yours has one, you may borrow and use it for Repairs.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/repair-windows-with-windows-startup-repair/

    Table of Contents

    1. Overview of the Windows Vista Repair options
    2. How to perform an automatic repair of Windows Vista using Startup Repair
    3. Advanced Tools overview
    4. Conclusion

If you do not have or can not borrow a Microsoft DVD there is a download of a Vista Startup Repair ISO file available which you can make into a Bootable disk to do the above Startup Repair and that method is recommended by a lot of posters in these Forums.

Unfortunately, you have to buy it.

Here is a link to it:

    Saving your files:

You can pull the Hard Drive and put it in a USB Hard Drive Enclosure > plug it into another Computer > and attempt to read and copy over your Data that way.

Or, you can download Knoppix > make a Bootable disk from it > Boot into your System with it (IF your Hardware is all working) > and copy your Data from the Hard Drive that way.

    How to order Recovery Disks:

    Dell USA:

If in another Country, contact Dell Tech Support in your Country.

Some manufacturers no longer have Vista Recovery Disks available.

If that happens, you may have to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, that contains the files for the various Vista Editions (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) to be installed. The Product Key on your Computer / Laptop case determines which Edition is installed.

Other Manufacturers' Recovery DVDs are not to be used for the above purpose.

And you need to know the "bit" version for Vista, as 32bit and 64bit Editions come on different DVDs

Here is how to do a clean install of Vista, using a Microsoft Vista DVD:

And once the Operating System is installed, go to your Computer Manufacturer's website and obtain the latest Drivers for your particular Model Computer or Laptop.

And phone Activation may be required when using the above clean install Method.

    Get the details.

    Startup Repair

If your computer has a single operating system installed, repeatedly press the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again. [From Start - Help and Support].

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press ENTER.

    Select Startup Repair.

Startup repair makes a log file. See C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt.

To access if Windows won't start, on the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press ENTER.

    Select Command Prompt.

    Type

    type C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt |more
