PROBLEM WITH PRINTER CONNECTION - Error 0x00000214.

I have a simple home network including:

1 - desktop with Win 7 (32 bit), with a Canon Printer connected via USB (of course the printer is shared)

2 - notebook with Win 8.1 (64 bit)

3 - D-Link router.

from the Notebook (Win 8.1) I can see the network including the desktop (Win 7) and the Canon shared printer. If I try to connect the notebook (Win 8.1) to the shared printer it checks for driver, then search with Windows Update. After finding nothing, it asks for the driver. Since I can't give a driver path or name, it shut off with Error 0x00000214. I tried to install the Canon driver on the Netbook (win 8.1), I tried to give the canon driver path on the netbook (Win 8.1), but nothing happens.

Looking on internet i understood it could be a port problem or a compatibility problem between win 7 and win 8.1.

I also tried to add the printer and define a local port directly, but when I put the port name as \[desktop name][Canon printer name] it comes a pop up with ACCESS DENIED.

Can you maybe help me?

thanks

Alex

Hello Alex,

Thank you for the Update.

  1. What happens when you configure the printer with Windows 8.1 first then share it with windows 7?

I suggest that you reinstall the Printer driver, and add Printer again first in Windows 8.1 and then in Windows 7.

Following are the steps to remove Printer from Devices and Printer:

  1. Press Windows + R, type control.exe and then click on ok.
  2. Change the view by (from windows explorer) to large icons or small icons.
  3. Double Click on Devices and Printer.
  4. Right click on Canon Pixma IP3600 under Printer Column.
  5. Remove Device to Uninstall.

Following are the steps to remove Printer Driver from Program and Features:

  1. Press Windows + R, type control.exe and then click on ok.
  2. Double click on Programs and Features.
  3. Uninstall all the Canon related driver.

Restart the computer and add Printer again from Device and Printer:

  1. Click Add a Printer.
  2. In the Add Printer Wizard, select add a local printer.
  3. On the Choose a printer port page, make sure that the Use an existing port option button and the recommended printer port are selected, and then click next.
  4. In the Install the Printer Driver wizard, select Windows Update and then wait for few minutes which will display the list of available Printer Driver.
  5. Choose the Printer make and model and then install.

Note: You can also reinstall the driver with your driver CD which was provided by the manufacturer.

Are you using a Home Group or a Work Group?  If the latter, is Password Protected sharing On or Off?  Can you access other shared resources from the Windows 8.1 comp (assuming there are any).

No I'm not using any Home Group or Work Group. It is just in the netowrk (see below : RETE in italian means NETWORK). The printer I'm trying to connect to is the STAMPANTE DEI TESURI.

Please answer to my questions in my post on March 28. Thanks

    Alex

    Hi Divya,

    thankS for answering.

I checked at link you gave me and the Canon Pixma IP 3600 is compatible with both WIN 7 and WIN8.1

    When you write:

I would suggest you to visit the printer manufacturer website and install the drivers for

    Windows 8.1.

    which computer you refer to???

    please consider that:

    • the desktop PC (WIN7) has the Canon driver correctly installed. This  is connected with the printer via USB port, and works with no problem;
    • the notebook (WIN 8.1) has the Canon driver installed properly. If I connect via USB the printer to this notebook (WIN8.1), it works perfectly.
    • if I try the workaround you suggest (to define a local port with name of shared printer see http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bhitney/archive/2012/09/17/windows-8-cannot-connect-to-printer.aspx), after defining the port with \[IP address of the host computer]\ [The Share Name of the printer] I receive ACCESS DENIED (see my first post at the end). I tried this workaround on the Notebook (WIN8.1) only. Shall I do the same on the desktop (WIN7)? does it make sense???

Also please consider that WIN7 is 32 bit from 2010, while WIN8.1 is a 64 bit.

    Thank you again

    Alex

    Hi Alex,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft community.

Error code 0x00000214 this error code appears when you share printers from the network with Windows 7 network printer.

I would suggest you to visit the printer manufacturer website and install the drivers for

    Windows 8.1.

If Windows 8.1 drivers are not available you can install the drivers in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

    a) I would suggest you to check with the Windows Compatibility Center and check if the Canon printer is compatible or not.

Please follow the link given below and check if it helps:

    LINK: http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/ProductViewerWithDefaultFilters?TempOsid=Windows%208.1&Locale=en-in&Architecture=X64&Type=Hardware&ProductCategory=Printers%20%26%20scanners&CurrentPage=0&TotalPages=1&ShowCriteria=0&SortCriteria=Relevance&Compatibility=Unknown&LastRequested=2

    b) And also check if the device/software is not compatible, then try installing the printer driver in compatibility mode and check with the below link:

    LINK: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/make-older-programs-run#1TC=windows-8

If the issue persists, proceed with the below steps.

I would suggest you to change the port and check. Perform the steps listed below to install this printer.

    a) Click “Start”, click “Control Panel” and double click “Devices and Printers”.

    b) Click “Add a Printer”.

    c) Select "Add a local printer".

    d) Select "Create a new port". Choose "Local Port" as the type of the port.

    e) In the box "Enter a port name", type the address as the following format.

\[IP address of the host computer]\ [The Share Name of the printer]

    Then click “Next”.

    f) Choose the correct driver in the driver list. If there is no drivers available, click the button “Windows Update”, wait for the process finishes and then look for the driver again.

    g) Finish the installation.

Hope this information is helpful. Feel free to write us back for any further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.
