System Image backup problem

I'm trying to create s SystemsImagebackup  on a new Notebook that has a single USB port labeled "D", I have a new Sandisk 128 GB Ultra USB and reformatted it to NTFS file system and also tried with it formatted to exFAT but I keep getting this error message "The specified backup location could not be found or is not a supported backup location".

Can it be the "D" drive that is causing this problem, the USB drive shows up in File Explorer and it has 116 GB of free space.  I'm at a loss as to where to look for the problem, hope someone can help.

I am having the same  problem - also with a SanDisk thumb drive. I will try another drive...see if that will work. Thanks for the tip.

    Thanks for your reply Anil,

I followed your direction through Create a system Image, since the notebook does not have a DVD drive and is not on a network I'm left with the hard disk choice.  On the first try it said that the disk could not be used since it was not formatted for NTFS, the backup file will be 10 GB.  I reformatted the drive and on the second try i got "The drive is not a valid backup location.  Is there some rule that USB thumb  drives can't be used, or do I need to do something special with it?

Last night I connected a Seagate Backup Plus to the same USB port and it created the system image for me, I did not use the menu but the command prompt as administrator.  I now have the backup I need so I can try the Windows 10 update again, hoping I don't encounter any problems.  I guess that I now have a 128 GB general purpose thumb drive and I will turn to Sandisk to see if they have any suggestions.

    Thanks,

    Svend

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

    1. How many drives you have in Notebook?

If you have any other drive in the Notebook, then try to format D drive and check.

Also reformat the USB to FAT32 and retry.

    1. Log on to a Windows 8.1 computer with the administrator account.
    2. Click the Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop.
    3. Once on the desktop screen, hover the mouse to the bottom right corner.
    4. From the displayed options, click Settings.
    5. From the Settings pane, click Control Panel.
    6. On the Control Panel window, click System and Securitycategory.
    7. On the System and Security window, click File Historyfrom the right pane.
    8. From the left pane of the File History window, click Windows File Recovery option at the bottom.
    9. On the Windows File Recovery window, click Create a system image from the left pane.
    10. On the Create a system image window, click to select On a hard disk radio button. (In this demonstration). Alternatively, On one or more DVDs or On a network location radio button can also be selected to store Windows 8 system image backup to multiple optical media discs or on a network location, respectively.
    11. Once selected, click Next.
    12. On the Confirm your backup settings page, click Start backup to initiate the backup process.
    13. Wait until the Windows 8 system image is created. On the displayed Create a system repair disc box, click No to skip the system repair disc creation process. Alternatively, the Yes button can also be clicked in order to create a system repair disc.
    14. Back on the Create a system image box, click Close.
    15. Once done, close the Windows File Recovery window.
