Win Vista update loop

My computer is stuck on windows update 3 with a continuous loop. Computer will not start in any safe mode nor respond to restore to last known good configuation. Repair your computer will not produce any restore points. I tried installing the vista installation disk but the computer seems to ignore the disk and will return to the update 3 loop. The screen with the continuous loop will stay on for a short while and then shut down and restart and return to the same screen and windows update 3 loop. Nothing seems to work.

Sorry, Andrew, I should have said "Update 3 of 3" when windows is auto updating after rebooting your computer.

    Your advice was helpful, nonetheless.

    Thank you, Don

    "Update 3" as in service pack 3,vista only has SP2,none after,normal updates,but no SP3.

    If a SP3 was installed,its for another OS,either way,with power off,unplug,open pc case,remove the

MB battery, leave off for 10 minutes, reinstall, power up pc.You'll need to enter the BIOS on start-up,

reset date/time,etc as it returns to default. Also, set for any addon hardware, save & exit, let windows

    start-up...Once in windows,or safe-mode,open cmd,type: Sfc /Scannow  once its thru,type:

CHKDSK C: /F  agree to restart, type: EXIT  restart pc
