There has been times when I was playing a game on my computer, Sims 4 or Elder scrolls (it happened once with both) that it froze and pinkish squares showed up on the screen and some squares you could still see the game, sound was still playing but nothing moving and took forever to exit out or go to desktop. After a while it quit. The last time it did this, after it happened, my computer gave me a error code and said the pc would restart, the error code was 'DPC_watchdog_violation' I only got that code the last time it happend. The other times the pc was still on after it stopped. What is this?

    Hi Daneh,

I understand that you have an issue with playing games and get pink squares. I will surely help you with this issue.

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION bug indicates that the DPC watchdog executed, either because it detected a single long-running deferred procedure call (DPC), or because the system spent a prolonged time at an interrupt request level (IRQL) of DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.

To understand the issue better, let me know what is the make and model of the computer?

I would suggest you to download and install latest display driver for Windows 8.1 from the computer manufacturer website and check if it helps. If display drivers for Windows 8.1 are not available in the computer manufacturer website, I would suggest you to install latest display driver in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

To install the display driver in compatibility mode, I would suggest you to follow these steps.

    a. Download the latest display driver for Windows 8 or Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website and save it on your local disk.

    b. Right-click on the setup file of the driver and select “Properties”.

    c. Select “Compatibility” Tab.

    d. Place a check marknext to “Run this program in Compatibility mode” and select Windows 8 or Windows 7 from the drop down list.

    e. Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Hope this information helps. Reply to the post with updated status of the issue so that we can assist you further.
