Windows update always fails error code 80244019 trying to download Windows 10

Windows update always fails. Tried the fixit, no good. Always get error code 80244019. I reserved Windows 10 upgrade (have 8.1), but then wanted to cancel. I didn't accept license agreement from Windows 10 upgrade toolbar icon. After this, Windows update repeatedly tried to download Windows 10 and failed. Got no Windows updates for a month. I now want to get Windows 10, but I can't get the Windows update working.

The problem seems to have "fixed itself". All I did was use the fixit (didn't work at the time) and turn my modem and computer (via shutdown) off and on! Initially didn't work, then later I noticed I was getting Windows updates. Windows 10 installed okay. My internet was working. Then another session Windows update failed again for the same reason. So I shut down my computer and restarted. It was fixed and since then no problems. I hope this helps, best to try simple solutions first.

Edit: the problem reoccurred, so after shutdown and restart I did a full scan with Windows Defender, which found nothing. Your link for the Microsoft Safety scanner was broken. Since my Windows update is again working and up to date, I'm hoping this shows I don't have a virus.

Your other link seemed to be for Windows 8.1, so I didn't try it as I've now got Windows 10. Any more suggestions?

I tried your link for resetting Windows update components. It couldn't find anything, although the problem is now intermittent and it's responding to shutdown and reboot. Will try it again if it reoccurs.

    Hello,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

If you receive error 80244019 while downloading updates, the most common cause is a computer virus that has turned off Windows Update, or another service on your computer that is needed by Windows Update. If your computer is infected with a virus, you will need to scan and clean it first, and then restart these services. While your computer might not be infected with a virus, it is recommended that you follow steps to scan for viruses, and then turn the services on.

    Refer to the following methods:

    Method 1:

You may also run the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure computer is free from infections:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

If the issue still exists, follow the next method to reset Windows Update components.

    Method 2:

Refer to the following link to reset Windows Update components.

How do I reset Windows Update components?

Hope this information is helpful. Do let us know if you need any further assistance, we will be glad to assist you.
