Excluded File Types

I want to exclude .jpg files from custom scans since AFAIK they do not carry malware. It would seem like a simple task, but what is the format of this exclusion list? In the past one usually made a list like: .jpg,.bmp,.gif etc... is it the same for Windows Defender in Windows 10? Nowhere can I find that simple bit of information. Go to Defender help and it dumps you here to sift through thousands and thousands of posts. What a system.

Can anyone give me the format of the excluded file type list? It seems Defender doesn't care what you put there. You could type in the lord's prayer for all it cares.

    Thank you very much.

I went  back to Win 7. In that OS the help function gives that information directly. Just a small example of what's wrong with Win 10. I can't even uninstall the Win 10 upgrade program cleanly. I know its location though and I will just blow it away.

I really can't understand how MS can spend so much time and money and end up with a worse operating system than they had before. I'm sticking with Win 7 for good.

    Anyway, thanks for the response.

Settings | Windows Defender. Scroll down to Add an exclusion | Click on Exclude a file extension and type in the file extension.

Fail. Not the question I asked. I'm quite able to find where to enter the extension. Go back and read the question please.

This isn’t a sophisticated entry system, and it won’t parse a comma delimited string of file types, if that’s what you’re asking about. You have to type in each individual file extension, one at a time (e.g., .bmp), and then click OK. However, the input is filtered for some characters, so if you use a wildcard character, *.mp3 for example, the entry will be rejected. To remove an extension from the list, just click on it, then click Remove, and then OK. If you click the Cancel button in the confirmation dialog, it doesn’t clear the remove option, so that looks like a bug.
